St. Clare Updates for
October 24 - November 6, 2026
| | |
Greetings!
November is traditionally dedicated to praying for the faithful departed. During this month, the Church invites us to remember our loved ones who have died and to reflect on the beautiful Catholic teaching of Purgatory—a powerful expression of God’s mercy and love.
If Heaven is the fullness of life in God’s presence, and nothing imperfect can enter into that perfect communion, then we can be grateful that God, in His mercy, gives us the possibility of purification. Purgatory is not a second chance at salvation, nor is it a place of despair. It is the final purification of those who die in God’s grace but still need to be cleansed of the effects of sin before entering the fullness of Heaven.
St. Catherine of Genoa, who wrote extensively about Purgatory, reminds us that this purification is ultimately a work of divine love. She describes the soul’s experience as one of profound hope, because the soul knows that it is destined for union with God. As the obstacles to that union are removed, the soul becomes increasingly open to His love.
This is an important distinction: the souls in Purgatory are assured of Heaven, but they still undergo purification. This is why our prayers for them matter. Through the communion of saints, we remain united in Christ, and our prayers, especially the offering of the Holy Mass, are a precious spiritual gift for those who have died.
St. Augustine expressed this enduring bond beautifully:
“The entire Church observes the custom handed down by the Fathers: that we pray for those who have died in the communion of the Body and Blood of Christ.”
Our prayers are an expression of love that does not end at the grave. One day, we too may depend on the prayers of others as we prepare to enter the fullness of God’s presence.
Our All Souls’ Day Mass Intentions
During the month of November, St. Clare of Assisi Parish continues the long-standing tradition of accepting All Souls envelopes for Mass intentions.
Please keep the following in mind:
- One envelope means one Mass. Envelopes are available at the entrance of the church. You may also use your own envelope, provided it is clearly marked “All Souls.”
- Write the names of your deceased loved ones on the envelope and include your donation. Envelopes may be placed in any of the Sunday collection boxes throughout November or mailed to the parish.
- Each envelope will be used for one Mass intention, to be celebrated by me or another priest. Please note that we will not be able to provide the specific date on which each intention will be celebrated.
I warmly encourage you to continue this beautiful Catholic tradition. By offering Masses and praying for the faithful departed, we entrust our loved ones—and all those who have no one to remember them—to the infinite mercy of God.
May our prayers strengthen our hope in the resurrection and remind us that, in Christ, love is stronger than death.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Fr. Maciej

PROJECT ADVANCE 2026
So far, we have raised $142,576.72 towards our goal of $250,000.
This is from only 28% of our parishioners. We have exceeded our diocesan goal of $63,300.
So now every single additional dollar donated comes back to the parish. This will help pay down our mortgage as well as help ‘BUILD OUR NEW RECTORY’.
By now you will have received a letter from Fr. Majiej reminding you how important this campaign is to our parish. Please consider donating prayerfully.
Remember, every gift regardless of its size makes a difference. Every gift counts.
You can donate online at projectadvance.ca or pick up a pledge form in the lobby. (in the forms rack on the wall by the bulletin board). The completed pledge can be dropped in the collection box, or it can be mailed or dropped in person at the office.
Our way forward begins with your generosity in growing our parish and local Catholic communities. We’re very grateful for your support.
| | UPDATE ON NOAH FROM NATALIA KUBIAK & MATT GORE | | "Since Father has shared our story with the parish, we have been astounded by the outpouring of support that the St. Clare’s community has shown us. Words cannot express how grateful we are for the donations, kind words, and other small acts of kindness from you." | | Food for Thought . . . and for the Soul | | |
Pope Leo XIV has named St. John Henry Newman the next Doctor of the Church and in 2025 we were at a Mass in the Soho Square St Patrick's Catholic church in London, celebrating that special time.
Newman was no ordinary Catholic. He was a convert from the Anglican Communion. His conversion cost him everything: he lost his job, he lost his relationship with his sister, he lost his friends, and he lost the influence he had on the minds of Anglicans throughout England.
Newman had been a famous theologian, much like Bishop Barron for American Catholics today. But he was Anglican . . . until he wasn’t!
What did he receive by becoming a Catholic? He received what he believed to be the one true faith, and for him, that was electric.
Newman pioneered what would become official Catholic teaching at Vatican II: the development of Christian doctrine. His understanding of development forced him to leave the comforts of Anglicanism for the challenging life that awaited him as a Catholic. Without fear, he followed where God was leading him intellectually. And now we get to learn all about it.
That is why Newman is being named a Doctor of the Church: because he lived on the cutting edge of theology, no matter the cost. In fact, his alma mater, Oxford University, recognized his contribution to the field of theology by granting him an honorary doctorate degree. Now the Catholic Church is granting him an even greater honor.
Then came St. John Henry Newman. The crown jewel of Newman’s theological career is his great work, "The Development of Christian Doctrine". In fact, it was what he discovered as he wrote this work that made him Catholic.

A Prayer by St John Henry Newman
May the Lord support us all the day long,
Till the shades lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.
Then in his mercy may he give us a safe lodging, and holy rest, and peace at the last.
Amen

What am I looking for in life?
What is the meaning of my life?
How can I be a better person?
What can I do about the loneliness I feel?
How can I come to know God's love?
How can I know the right path God has in store for me?

Mass Intentions
Dates may be subject to change without notice.
| | |
If you wish to book a Mass Intention, please send your request via email at stclareofassisi@shaw.ca giving the name of the person, whether it is for a living or deceased person, who it is from and if you have any preferences for the day of the week, a weekend mass or specific date. We will try to book your mass intention as close to the request as possible. Please note that there may be unforeseen situations when your scheduled date may be changed without notice.
The suggested offering for a mass intention is $10 and can be brought to the office, mailed to 1320 Johnson Street, Coquitlam, V3B 4T5 or dropped in the collection box in the church. Enclose your offering in an envelope clearly marked with the name and date of your Mass intention. Your offering will go to the priest who says the mass, not to the church.
If you are unable to use email, mass intentions may be phoned in at 604-941-4800.
| | We are able to accept multiple Mass intentions on Fridays. For all other days, the priest can accept one intention only per day. | | |
