50+ Job Seekers in MA
Statewide Networking Groups
Over sixty libraries across Massachusetts, including Raynham Public Library, have partnered to offer the 50+ Job Seekers Networking Group program. The 50+ Job Seekers in Massachusetts program was created for the “forgotten job seekers” – those in the 50+ demographic who find themselves unemployed, retired, or trying to re-enter the workforce after a lengthy employment gap.
All of these individuals, regardless of the circumstances, are all dealing with issues of age discrimination during their job search/employment process, in addition to all the challenges that anyone in career transition faces: stress, anxiety, fear, low self-esteem, self-doubt, lack of purpose, concern about the future.
|
|
The 50+ program provides 50+ job seekers with robust materials, strategies, content, and guidance to network and navigate their way through a successful job search. They’re taught how to network and use research tools, as well as how to overcome ageism embedded in the online application process; they can learn how to create a resume and elevator pitch to combat age stereotypes.
Raynham Public Library offers this free program biweekly on Zoom and is facilitated by Debbi Hope, MBA, PCIC, MC, an experienced Executive Career Coach and Certified Master Coach. The Zoom room opens 30 minutes early for informal networking & resource sharing. Registration is required for each individual session, and you can register for morning sessions here or evening sessions here. The next available session is Wednesday, March 8th, and the topic is Developing a Resume!
To ask any questions or for help to register, call (508) 823-1344. You can find more information on the group’s website by 50plusjobseekers.org. Thanks to Raynham Public Library for joining this group!

Historical Tidbit:
The Spirit of "Seventy-Six"
"During the Revolution the quota of men for the war was large and readily filled. On the first call for soldiers, Sergeant George King rode through the town with drum and fife, calling at every house with the proclamation, "Rally! The British are shooting our Massachusetts men! Rally, and drive them out of the country!"
Minute men, with three days' provisions packed, were in readiness at call. Benjamin King was one of the committee of safety for this section of country. Dr. Fobes describes the political spirit as active and prompt. He states that the militia companies were well disciplined and equipped."

Climate Can-Do:
Help Our Community Reduce Plastic Bag Usage
When we go to the grocery store, we're not typically focused on how we're bringing our goods home. We browse the aisles, putting item after item into our cart, and eventually make our way to the checkout line. Placing groceries on the conveyor belt, we watch the cashier scan items, then place them into bags, often those thin plastic bags. When we get home, we put our purchases away, grab the plastic bags, and what happens next?
Massachusetts residents are estimated to use more than 2 billion plastic bags every year. That means that on average, every Massachusetts person uses a plastic bag every single day! While plastic is versatile, lightweight, inexpensive, and waterproof, this has lead to overuse and the creation of serious problems. Plastic is a synthetic material that does not biodegrade; once it enters the environment, it stays there forever! Bringing reusable bags only cuts back our individual use. We are now dealing with microplastics in our drinking water. These bags are a problem.
A solution: as of May 2022, 154 of the 292 cities and towns in Massachusetts have cut back single use by regulating plastic shopping bags. This number represents over 4 million people, which is about two-thirds of the state’s population. A few of our hives are represented in this number, including Bridgewater, Halifax, and Whitman! If you want to get a plastic bag ban passed in your community, reach out to your local elected officials, and local trails, beautification, garden clubs, and conservation commissions to generate support.
This Climate Can-Do Article was written by intern Tess Fiumefreddo of Franklin & Marshall College. We focus on actions which will help mitigate the environmental changes of our climate emergency. We can do!

Bridgewater State University's Project EarthView Visits Second Graders
at Dr. E. Joseph Laliberte Elementary School
|
|
On February 10th, Bridgewater State University’s Project EarthView paid a visit to the second-graders of Laliberte Elementary. A collaborative effort between BSU’s Department of Geography and the Center for the Advancement of STEM Education, this project was created to teach students about the world. However, their main goal is to emphasize the need for more geography instruction in primary and secondary schools.
|
|
While Project EarthView began with one hand-painted, 20-foot inflatable globe, the program now includes a 22-foot satellite imaged globe and giant floor maps. They have also expanded their educational outreach to include workshops appropriate for adolescents in high school. Project EarthView has reached over 100,000 students in Massachusetts, as well as been given the opportunity to travel to the State House in Boston and participate in several regional and national academic conferences.
Thank you, Project EarthView, for teaching our students about the places that make up the world!

In Like a Lion...
"March is the month of expectation."
~ Emily Dickinson
"Every cold and dark phase ends and hence begins a beautiful phase of warmth and vibrance. Don’t believe? Just notice March."
~ Anamika MishraI
"I try not to limit my madness to March."
~ Maxine
"Happy March! May the luck of the Irish be with you all month long." ~ Some Irish Dude. : )
|
One of my favorite months, filled with wind, and mud, first flowers, lore and everything green. Few other months have so much... character!
While I won't beware the ides of March, I will check the weather forecast several times a day, keeping sweaters nearby and dressing in layers to be prepared.
Speaking of famous March lions, CS Lewis writes: "Aslan is not a tame lion", He is, however, full of wisdom from before time; and He, as the story goes, becomes a sacrificial lamb by the end, only to be re-born.
Enjoy your changeable month, bringing us the hope of new growth, of flowers pushing through the cracked earth, of re-birth.
In hope, Jacquie
