Families come in all shapes and sizes -- and you are part of ours!

How do you define family?

Not every province celebrates Family Day, but it has become a more common holiday in this country. It takes Valentine’s Day and pushes the boundaries further out. Family is the basic unit that makes up our social structure -- no matter what shape that family takes. The old adage goes that nobody gets to the end of their life and says “I wish I’d spent more time at work”. Family is where our heart lies. It’s why we work, and it’s where we go to have fun, to feel safe. At Threads of Life, our mission is to help families heal. We often talk about our Threads of Life families. It’s not that everyone we serve has to come to us in a group with their partner, kids and parents. There are plenty of individuals who come to Threads of Life solo, and we welcome them. But we know that when a tragedy happens, the ripples spread. It’s never just one person affected -- it’s a whole family, and ultimately a whole community. Many workplaces talk about their employees as a family too. If you say that, you likely mean that the people who work there are tied together by common experience and concern for one another. This Family Day, or Valentine’s Day, we wanted to share some hopeful stories from our Threads of Life families. We hope you’ll think of your workplace as family, and we hope you’ll include us in your definition of family too.

Partnering to protect tomorrow’s workers

If there’s one thing that’s important to Threads of Life members, it’s ensuring that the new generation of workers will be safe and healthy. We have many partners who share that goal with us, including funders and educators. Dave Campbell is a faculty member at Nova Scotia Community College and a longtime supporter of Threads of Life. As an instructor for students in occupational health and safety, he has often brought Threads of Life speakers to share their stories with the class, and has also encouraged students to volunteer with Steps for Life. We recently recognized Dave for being a positive influence on OH&S programming throughout Nova Scotia and promotion of Threads of Life to the community. Learn how you can help spread the word too.

Steps for Life - Walking for Families of Workplace Tragedy is coming and this year, we’d love to see a wave of attention and awareness across this country. You can help make that happen! Spread the word about Steps for Life and Threads of Life by following us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, sharing our posts and creating posts of your own. For 2020 we’re using the hashtag #MyWhy for our volunteers to talk about why Steps for Life is important to them. You can also use the hashtag #stepsforlife. (in 2019 #stepsforlife was actually trending on Twitter for a little while!)
