Parenting plans are often treated as neutral, standardized frameworks — but in practice, they reflect deeply embedded assumptions about family structure, communication styles, parental roles and child-rearing “norms,” which may be based on misplaced assumptions or understandings. This panel will challenge attorneys to examine how culture shapes those assumptions and to consider whether our current approaches truly serve all the families we represent.
Join us April 8 at 6 p.m. CT, when Judge Herman Walker and Dr. April Harris Britt will lead a discussion featuring insights from both the bench and clinical practice, exploring how cultural values, traditions and lived experiences influence parenting arrangements, co-parenting dynamics and the best interests of the child. Panelists will offer practical guidance on identifying and addressing cultural considerations in custody and parenting time decisions, as well as highlight common pitfalls where well-intentioned advocacy may fall short.
This session is designed for attorneys seeking to deepen their cultural competence, improve client-centered advocacy and develop more thoughtful, inclusive approaches to parenting plans.
Registration is also open for the May 13 and June 10 discussions. More information on those events is coming soon!
