March is National Reading Month

Read Across America (RAA) is the reading program launched by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998. Most of us know about Read Across America Week because it begins on Dr. Suess’s birthday, March 2. But did you know that RAA is designed to be a year-round program? The NEA has many resources available including a monthly reading calendar, activities, and reading suggestions for kids and teens.

Research from Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) tells us that more than 25 million children are not proficient readers. Poor reading skills prevent them from achieving success in school, reaching their dreams, and being involved in all areas of life. Research has shown diverse stories provide kids with different perspectives of the world around them. The ability for a kid to see a character that is like them is a strong motivator to continue reading. In addition, diversity allows kids to experience aa view of the world through another person’s perspective.

Book Lists and Reading Challenge

Celebrate National Book Month with us!

Do you have favorite books that you love to read aloud? Are there books that are constantly requested by your kids?

Share your favorite books online to help encourage others to try new stories. Tag ChildCareEd when sharing books online. Let's see how many tagged titles we can collect by March 31. Stay tuned to see if your favorite books made the list. Links to ChildCareED Social Media can be found at the bottom.

To get started, check out our lists for infants, toddlers, and preschool. There is even a list for all the Dr. Suess books. If you want to keep track of the books the class has read over the month a book log is available too. It can be used for whole class or for each child.

Here's the Challenge...

Can the class read 20 minutes a day for the next 21 days? Establish a set time and book selection process for the class and/or the kids if they are going to have their own book logs. For individual book logs get parents involved by allowing the kids to count the book in their logs. The possibilities are endless.
