Summary of SNAP changes this year:
The HR1 Bill, passed on July 4, 2025, made the biggest cut to SNAP in the program’s history - nearly $200 billion was taken away from the program. Since then, over 92,000 Alabamians have lost SNAP, including over 23,000 children.
This year, The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama and our community partners have been asking lawmakers to delay the cost shift of SNAP to states for two years to allow time for the state to correct errors and make administrative changes. When the cost does shift from federally funded to state funded, Alabama will be responsible for $174 million to keep SNAP benefits, which were 100% federally funded for decades.
