Winter 2022

President's Letter

Last year our annual Gallery 21 Exhibition showed the amazing work of 26 wonderfully talented members. Hopefully, you got a chance to view the show.

We had a very successful trip to the Cheech Museum in Riverside last summer. It included a large exhibit of works by the de la Torre brothers. We rented a bus so we could all travel together and enjoy the trip.

Our next general meeting to start off the 2023 year will be Sunday, January 22 at Pat Warren’s studio. It is a fun meeting where you get to see and talk with members while enjoying a potluck. Try and make it to the meeting because this is when we ask for ideas for the year that our members would like to see and do.

It has been a much better year and we are back on track working to make the AGASC an organization of which we can all be proud and excited to be a member.

Annual Members Exhibition in Balboa Park

Our 41st Annual Members Exhibition was held from November 18 to 28th, with the Artist reception Sunday November 20th. Two special Categories were sponsored by Oceanside Glass and Tile and Coatings by Sandberg. Other categories included wall art, sculpture, mixed media / wearable art, platters and vessels. Once again, our very talented membership did not disappoint!

Co-chairs Jon Simpson and Krista Heron handled the logistics involved with the annual exhibition. We were fortunate in securing our three judges from out of town. Terri Grant from Richland, Washington, brought her expertise in kiln forming. Jeff Lindsay, owner of Red Hot Metal in Chico, CA was our hot glass expert. Evelyn Gottschall Baker from Colorado, famous for her pate de verre and casting, rounded out the three. All are experts and well-respected artists, bringing the balance necessary to take on this very difficult task. Krista commented that each time a judge would emerge for a quick break, they would shake their heads and say "this is really difficult".

Tom Marosz had a big show, taking Best of Show for his Dino's Wheel, and Tom's Baby Wings took People's Choice. Oceanside Glass and Tile first place was awarded to Paul Messink for Grand Mosque, Muscat, Oman and Coatings by Sandberg first place was awarded to Jon Simpson for Stranger Things.

It's never too early to start working towards this year's show! Dates will be announced soon. Thanks to all who worked hard to make this show happen, and thanks to all who exhibited and attended!

And a special thank you to our sponsors who contributed to our show!

Oceanside Glass and Tile, Coatings by Sandberg, Bullseye Glass, Glass Accessories Int'l./Toyo, His Glass Works, Pacific Art Glass, Rayzist Photomask, and Red Hot Metal/Cutting Edge Products.

Trip to the Cheech Museum in Riverside

Twenty-eight participants joined an AGASC sponsored bus trip to the Cheech Marin Museum for Chicano Arts in Riverside, California. It’s a newly opened museum located near the Riverside Art Museum. The Cheech was created from a renovation of the old Riverside Library.

The first floor is all Cheech Marin's collection of Chicano art, but the first thing we encountered was the de la Torre brother’s 24-foot by 14-foot lenticular in the main lobby. It was spectacular. Cheech’s art collection was thought-provoking and shows the flavor of Chicano culture.

The second floor is a collection of the de la Torre brothers’ art called "Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective", a three-decade retrospective of their work. It’s not a misspelling in the title, the brothers meant for the play on words. Their art was a collection of blown glass, found objects, lenticulars, and mixed media. Everyone was astounded by the quality and thought-provoking imagination of the show.

Fallbrook Galaxy of Glass

Fallbrook Center for the Arts presented the 25th Anniversary Galaxy of Glass Show. This is one of the most comprehensive glass shows in California and features many of the members of our Art Glass Association. The large professional gallery is spacious and has wonderful lighting for viewing glass art. The artist reception is always well attended where guests can discuss the work with the artists, learning about technique and concept. There were several 'Invitational Artists' who do not usually exhibit at the show including Stephen Edwards, Kari Minnick, Michael Hernandez and Deanne Sabek.

AGASC Holiday Party

No one throws a party like we do and thanks to our gracious hostess Krista Heron, this year was the best! A lovely dinner buffet and decadent desserts. For many years the Holiday Party has been a costumed theme event and this one was Steampunk. We have done 50's, 60/70's, Roaring 20's, PJ's, Casbah nights, Hollywood Glamour, and Ugly Christmas Sweaters. Krista made some awesome trophies for the best costumes. Whatever the theme the costumes are always over the top and the highlight of the evening is our gift exchange. This year it was required to be made by the artist as some years it was a bit of a wine and chocolate swap. Stealing is the main bit of fun. What a great way to cap off the year!
