From High School to Healthcare at Brockton Neighborhood Health Center!

Thanks to a co-op program with Southeastern Regional Vo-Tech High School in Easton, seven seniors have medical assistant jobs waiting for them at Brockton Neighborhood Health Center (BNHC)! The co-op program gave these students the opportunity to study and learn at the Health Center since their junior year. According to the BNHC Facebook, when the students graduate, BNHC will offer each student a full or part-time position as a Medical Assistant! Congratulations to Ashley Lema, Natalie Mendes, Jasmine Scott, Lauriane Andrade, Maura Texiera, Eliana Barros, and Elle Dodd (left to right in the image)!

In 1994, the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center was "more concept than creation." Since then, the BNHC has provided quality healthcare to close to 39,000 members of the community for almost 30 years! The BNHC has also begun using a medical trailer, which harkens back to their heritage. The trailer is "moved throughout greater Brockton to bring health care to those who can’t travel." To find out more about the history of the BNHC, take a look at their website: bnhc.org/about/history.

The History of Penmanship in Schools

Belmont School Handwriting: Cale Ledakowski, student at the Belmont School practices her handwriting as part of her reading test; March 16, 1955.

Students were taught students cursive as part of the regular curriculum, it was commonly called "penmanship."

In 2010 Common Core standards dropped requirements that the skill be taught in public elementary schools, but we still need historians who can read cursive. So this unique skill will be cherished.

Climate Can Do:
Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle

One of the many ways that we can help against climate change is to reduce our consumption, reuse pieces that we already have, and upcycle them to make something new. Often we are quick to throw things out that we are no longer using, but why not give things a second life and keep them out of the landfills?

Ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle
  • Before throwing something away, consider if you or someone else could use it again in the same or different way. Passing things on to friends, selling on marketplaces, or donating them are all ways to give something another life.
  • Avoiding overconsumption is challenging, but being mindful of new purchases curbs the amount of new things being made.
  • Upcycling is taking something old and making it into something new! These projects can be practical, creative and fun!
  • Feel the need to shop? Going thrifting and buying second hand is a fun way to get your shopping fix in and find unusual items, inexpensively.
  • The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the world’s carbon emissions and consumes 10% of all water used industrially worldwide. (Sustainable Harvest International)
  • Shop close to home and within your community. People often resell or give away things they do not need anymore. It could be just what you are looking for!

The more we reduce our consumption of products, reuse and upcycle, the more we keep out of landfills and we lower production in the first place. This also saves you money while helping to keep the environment safe for us humans.

Re-Birth

“Getting a second life is one thing. Making a better life, that's the trick.”
~ Rick Riordan, The Blood of Olympus

“i learnt from the autumn leaves, the formula of healing.
every year, they break, fall off the trees and die.
and then again in a few months, they find their way back home.
reborn, living a new life just to die again.
but never did that stop them growing again.
so why can't we humans just live up to them.
fall, get hurt, bear pain but have enough
courage and energy to stand up and fight back again.” ~ Renesmee Stormer
As the buds dare to show themselves on the tips of these bare branches, and slowly we see color emerge from forsythia and daffodils; once again we succumb to re-birth, as a child pushed crying from the womb.

We grow a year wiser, encouraged to see the earth and it's inhabitants through a new lens. What shall we do better in 2024? In what ways shall WE grow?

~ Jacquie
