Rotary Club of Lafayette in the "Let Our Flag Fly" project for Memorial Day
The meaning of this holiday can be found in its name: "America Remembers."
No one is sure just how or when this day came about, but the first national observance of Memorial Day was held on May 30, 1868. Since then, Memorial Day has become a day to honor all Americans who died in wars.
But a deeper meaning exists. Our forefathers used their best efforts to foresee a country that embraces inclusion and addition, rather than division and subtraction; a country built on unison to strengthen a uniqueness unknown previously throughout the world. The American Flag that flies beautifully over Lafayette on Memorial Day is a reminder that our flag flies for all of us, because we live in the United States of America. United We Stand!
The Rotary Club of Lafayette would be remiss if we didn't share our appreciation for our shopping center sponsors, who joined with the Rotary Club of Lafayette in the "Let Our Flag Fly" project.

White Pony Express needs your help!
May 31st is the last day for their spring fundraising campaign – just a few days away! They have raised $103k, but the goal is to raise $150k. This means they have $47k to go! $150k has been pledged in matching funds, so every dollar you give will be doubled.
In Contra Costa County, 1 in 6 people are food insecure, yet 40% of all food is thrown away and ends up in landfills. WPE has rescued and delivered 24 million pounds of nutritious food—more than 20 million meals—and prevented 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions from entering the air we breathe.
At a time when emergency food benefits have run dry and food prices continue to rise with inflation, meeting their $150k goal is more important than ever. DONATE NOW!
|
|
One Week Left To Double Your Donation

If you would like to double your donation, please click HERE or mail a check to Community Foundation of Lafayette, PO Box 221, Lafayette, CA 94549.

Be Part of the Food Bank's Nourish 365 Community
Cuts to emergency food benefits and high prices at the grocery store are making it harder than ever for our neighbors to put food on their tables. At the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano, they're facing uncertainty too. The need is still rising, but the donations and funding that helped them serve our community these past three years are going down.
In times like these, sustaining Nourish 365 monthly donors are more important than ever. These 3,300 monthly donors collectively provided $1.4 million in donations and 3 million meals for our neighbors last year. And it’s their support (whether it’s $5 a month or $50 — any amount makes an impact!) that provides the predictability and stability the Food Bank needs to be there for our neighbors no matter what.
NEW CHALLENGE: The Food Bank has set a goal to grow its community of monthly donors by 700 by June 30. And, thanks to a generous anonymous donor, your first monthly gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000! Join the Nourish 365 community today.

SHELTER, Inc. Partners to Create Affordable Housing for Chronically Homeless
During May’s Affordable Housing Month, SHELTER, Inc. was proud to share news of our partnership with the City of Vallejo and the Firm Foundation, to manage the Broadway Project, 47 long-term affordable housing units for chronically homeless individuals, expected to open late summer. We engaged Factory OS, who create prefabricated modular housing units, with materials and labor costs reduced nearly 45%, and a time savings of 40-50% faster than traditional construction. SHELTER, Inc. will act as service provider, selecting, then staffing the units with 24-hour coverage and wrap-around services to help the tenants stabilize their lives and remain housed. A SHELTER, Inc. SUCCESS STORY
Bryce came to our Recovery Residence after a harrowing journey through addiction and recovery. After marrying her childhood sweetheart, having a baby, working six years at a hospital and becoming a homeowner, she developed a drinking addiction, which cost her everything. Her drinking forced her to quit her job, ended her marriage, lost her ownership of her residence and custody of her 3-year-old daughter.
She went to rehab but relapsed, and began couch surfing, then totaled her car and lost ID and debit cards. Family would not help her due to the addiction, and she entered an abusive relationship. She entered rehab a second time, determined to stay sober and start over, with only the clothes on her back.
She credits Shelter Inc.’s Alcohol and Other Drugs Recovery program with helping her get through a second rehab, after which she got a job and a car. She works on her recovery every day, and is grateful for the chance to start over. She wants people to know that no matter how hard life hits someone, you can always recover, because there are people who are willing to help and places like SHELTER, Inc.

The Sydney Paige Foundation is very excited to invite local businesses to participate in their employee engagement backpack program. This program, which had to be put on hold during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, is now back and thriving.
SPF is dedicated to boosting collaboration, fostering connections, and enhancing overall employee satisfaction. Just ask Lamorinda Pediatrics and XYZ Graphics, who have already benefited from this program. supplies that they manufacture, ensuring that underserved children receive the
best possible resources. Additionally, thanks to amazing partnership with Toys
For Tots, SPF received a generous donation of 15,000 high-quality toys & will include one of these toys with every backpack donated by your company, completely free of charge.

Lamorinda Village
On March 28th, Carl Anduri, the Mayor of the City of Lafayette, announced at his first Zoom “Coffee”, that the City of Lafayette will be donating up to $60,000 per year for two years, to sponsor memberships in Lamorinda Village for senior residents who otherwise would be unable to join. This is among some of the first private-public collaborations for villages across the U.S.
The Board and Staff at LV have worked on this project with the City for over a year. Throughout this process, our number one goal was to ensure that our current and future members receive the same care and attention that we have been able to provide over the years. In order to maintain our high standard of service, we will be reaching out to the community to engage additional volunteers to support our growing organization. If you are interested in joining us as a volunteer or if you are interested in membership, please contact the office at 925.283.3500 or by email at info@lamorindavillage.org. Lafayette Historical Society Celebrating 175+ Years
Seven utility boxes along Mt. Diablo Boulevard in downtown Lafayette are being updated with new artwork. The new utility box wraps feature a collage of historic images intended to increase awareness of our local history and contribute to the cultural identity of our city.
The Lafayette Historical Society (LHS) and the City's Public Art Committee collaborated with graphic designer Danielle Gogo-Gallagher to create the series of beautifully designed, photo-realistic history wraps utilizing archival photos from LHS’s impressive collection. The boxes are located along Mt. Diablo Boulevard between First Street and Dolores Drive. Each box includes a QR code that can be scanned using a smartphone to access educational information presented by the Lafayette Historical Society on the historical relevance of the archival images.
You can directly visit the individual pages for each box by following the links below:
The new utility box wraps are part of the City of Lafayette’s 175+ Years celebration in 2023. The City is working in partnership with the Lafayette Historical Society to increase awareness and appreciation of our history including recognition and understanding of the indigenous people who were first on the land that is now Lafayette, as well as the Spaniards and Rancheros that preceded American settlers who laid out the built community that we see today.
In addition to the new utility box wraps, there will be several events and presentations throughout the year including monthly presentations to the City Council, copies of “Images of America: Lafayette” circulated through Little Free Libraries in Lafayette and more!

During the Awards presentation held on May 10, at Boundary Oak, in Walnut Creek, Scholarships recipients, i.e., future mechanical engineers, biologists, nurses, musicians, anthropologists, et al, acknowledged the generosity of foundations, individual donors (chapter members included) and revenue earned at the Assistance League Thrift Shop, the chapter’s primary fundraiser located in Lafayette. Their collective message, “I want to thank my family for their sacrifice and support…Life’s struggles made me the person I am today and now I have the financial capability to pursue my dreams…I will be the first in my family to graduate from college…I am a single mother with two kids…educators are a great influence in my life…”

Do you have a Nonprofit you care about?
It's that time of the year. Nonprofit organizations you care about are ramping up for the fall annual fundraising event season. It’s an important time. Yet fundraising has become more of a challenge than ever.
- Charitable giving, relative to the entire economy continues its long-term decline. That means fighting for a decreasing pool of funds.
- How are donors going to react to uncertain economic conditions? Why donate to you versus another cause?
- How many were hurt by the banking failures in our area? Are former reliable donors going to be on the sideline this year?
Why not explore the use of a custom produced video that powerfully reaches the emotions of your audience. Video is one of the strongest tools you have to create engagement and produce emotional connection. And it is not just having a video. It is using video in a strategic way to draw in your donors.
fLO Content is a boutique video company that understands the fundraising needs of nonprofits. We have helped numerous organizations to use video to get greater results from their fundraising efforts. (For more on our work go here: https://flocontent.com/non-profit-video-production-company/) fLO Content offers free initial, video strategy consultation.
