Notice of Annual Meeting

Thursday, May 28, 9:00 am

Compo Beach Pavillion

This Thursday May 28, the Y's Men will meet at the Compo Beach Pavilion.

Please note two important changes. One is the new location for our annual meeting. Instead of Sherwood Island we will be meeting at the Compo Beach pavillion. The second is that we will be serving a catered breakfast and not our typical lunch.

The meeting will start at 9:00 am with coffee and breakfast followed by the last business meeting of the year where we will ratify the vote on the new slate of officers for 2026/2027. We should finish by around 11:00 am.

Note: The Sherwood Island Pavillion is being renovated and so closed to the public until the end of the year or beginning of the next.

Look for a survey soon asking if you plan to attend so a breakfast will be there for you.

Season Finale: Meet the Press with Our First Selectpersons

Westport First Selectman Kevin Christie addresses Y's Men last Thursday. He and Weston First Selectwoman Sam Nestor (on his left) appeared in a Meet-the-Press-style format to answer questions about their respective towns. On the panel were (left to right) Y's Men Jim Marpe, former First Selectman of Westport, Allan Siegert, Y's Men speaker chairman, and Jeff Wieser.

The Y's Men hosted Westport First Selectman Kevin Christie and Weston First Selectwoman Sam Nestor last Thursday to field questions in a Meet‑the‑Press‑style forum that ended this season's speakers program.

They tackled Westport’s newly set 13.2 mill rate and why many homeowners may still see higher tax bills, Nestor’s run for state Senate, a dense Riverside Avenue housing proposal and related traffic concerns, big‑ticket school and debt decisions in Weston, and the long‑running effort to dredge the Saugatuck River, in addition to other subjects.

Because of the format, and the excellent work of Y's Men Jim Marpe, Jeff Wieser and Allan Siegert, many more subjects than usual were covered and the meeting was most productive. In addition, the story and meeting video appeared on Dan Woog's "06880" blog.

A Place for Y's Men Ladies to Meet

During Summer Y's Men Social Hour

Liz Wong, wife of Y's Man Jim Wong, is organizing a new meet-up for wives, girlfriends and daughters of Y’s Men.

The group would meet at Compo Beach where the Y's Men are meeting during the summer. It would get together during the same time the Y’s Men have their weekly Thursday coffee meetings, which is from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. The women would meet in another location at the park, separate from the Pavilion, to sit and talk with each other.

The group could also offer great support for wives who have husbands who are infirm. In that case, these women could bring their spouses to the beach to meet with the guys and then have something to do themselves while the men are having their coffee. In another scenario the wife may be infirm but would like to socialize. In that case the Y's Man could bring his wife to the group while he goes to the coffee. It’s a win-win for everyone! Guys, talk to your wives if they don’t get our newsletter themselves.

Note that this will not be a Y’s Men club and should not be confused with The Y's Women of Westport, which is a group that, like the Y's Men, sponsors speakers and provides a variety of its own activities.

If interested, have your wife, partner or family member contact Liz Wong at  liz.yswives@gmail.com

Military History Group to Discuss Battle of Shiloh

The Battle of Shiloh, fought in April 1862, will be the subject of discussion when the Y's Men Military History Group meets Monday, June 1 at 10:15 am in room 211 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Y's Man Bill Chase will facilitate the discussion and Y's Man Paul Rohan will lead the meeting..

In announcing the meeting, the Group's Chairman Mark Perlman noted that tomorrow's Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day to commemorate the placing of flowers on the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers.

The Group meets on the first Monday of the month at the same time and place. For additional information, contact Y's Man Mark Perlman at firstdiv@optonline.net

David Pogue on "Apple: The First 50 Years" June 2 at Library

David Pogue, Emmy Award-winning CBS News correspondent and one of the most trusted voices in tech, and many times a Y's Men speaker, will appear at The Westport Library for a fascinating look at the story behind one of the world’s most iconic companies.

Drawing from his new book Apple: The First 50 Years, Pogue will take you inside the rise, fall, and reinvention of Apple, sharing surprising insights, untold stories, and firsthand accounts from the people who built it.

Whether you’re a lifelong Apple fan, a tech enthusiast, or simply curious about how innovation shapes our world, this is a rare chance to hear the real story behind a company that has transformed the way we live, work, and connect. With wit, depth, and decades of expertise, Pogue brings clarity and context to Apple’s legacy — and what its future might hold.

Say the word “Apple,” flash the famous logo, or play the familiar sounds of an Apple device, and you'll spark instant recognition—and usually a strong reaction. With billions of customers around the world, Apple isn’t just a tech giant; it’s one of the most influential, resented, and also beloved companies in history.

It’s hard to imagine a time when Apple wasn’t dominant, but during Steve Jobs’s absence in the late Eighties and early Nineties, it was struggling to survive, only weeks from bankruptcy. And yet, when the company turned 50 on April 1, 2026, it was one of the most valuable companies on earth, with a worth approaching $4 trillion.

Clambake Date Changed to June 18

The date for the Y's Men Clambake at the Ned Dimes Marina has been moved to Thursday, June 18, because of construction by Parks & Recreation.

Tickets will go on sale soon, and you'll be notified via Y's Men email. As always, this event sells out in one day — so watch for the announcement. Despite rising fuel and lobster costs, we've negotiated a great price.
