From the Director: Sue Bennett, LT'94
Dear LT Community:

First of all, I hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy.

There is much still unknown about this time we are in but two things seem clear. First, the pandemic is shining a light on inequities that have always existed. We are not all in the “same boat.” We may be in the same storm, but our boats (home life, job stability, access to health care, etc.) are very different, and the impacts of this virus are disproportionally affecting communities of color.

Second, human ingenuity and the importance of connection are widely evident. From scientists collaborating around the world, to people pooling their giving to help others, to neighbors helping neighbors, to front-line workers risking their health to help others; people’s compassion for each other is a testament to our better selves in this moment.

Looking forward, we have an opportunity to reset and reshape our region so that it is stronger and more equitable for all. This shared crisis offers shared opportunities. What new issues will be important to our region as we move into recovery? How can we reimagine education, economic, social safety, and health care systems so they work better for everyone?

This is also a time for growth, experimentation, and creativity with LT’s programs. In the last month, LT has pivoted to:

  • Staff working remotely
  • Updating the website to include resources for responding to the pandemic
  • Holding recruitment for the LT’21 class entirely virtually (hosting Zoom recruitment sessions featuring alumni panelists and conducting all candidate interviews via Zoom)
  • Creating short videos of alumni talking about LT and their leadership
  • Hosting a variety of online events for alumni in lieu of in-person gatherings
  • Reformatting the LT'21 curriculum, including moving Challenge Days to Zoom meetings with breakout rooms for small group work, providing reading materials and videos, hosting leadership speakers, offering free access to alumni events, and more.

I look forward to thinking and acting together as we find new ways to connect and inspire each other. Please read below for examples of alumni leadership in action and for resources and programming to stay informed and engaged.

Wishing you health and well-being!

With appreciation,
Sue Bennett, LT'94

COVID-19 Race & Equity Resources
We recognize that the pandemic is affecting all of us in different ways. COVID-19 and our societal response to the virus are disproportionately impacting communities of color. Here are a few resources to understand the impact of COVID-19 on communities of color and on how to use a racial equity lens in your organizational work.

For more resources related to COVID-19, check out our website. We've compiled a variety of resources with information about supporting local organizations and efforts, donating money to organizations on the front lines, volunteering your time, and much more.

Roundtable Speaker Series with Local
Business Owners and Leaders
As we mentioned earlier in the newsletter, we are pivoting and delivering content to the current class in a variety of ways.

As part of LT's Economy Challenge Month, we’re organizing a series of one-hour “roundtable” discussions with local leaders and business owners. As an alum, you are invited to attend and participate! These events are free.

Come hear from local business leaders about the following:  What communities of employees and clients does your business serve? What is the role of your organization/company in helping foster belonging and connection in those communities? How is COVID-19 affecting your business? What actions do you think private, public, and nonprofit sector leaders can take, together or separately, to address regional challenges, including but not exclusive to COVID-19, right now? What actions are you taking? These will be facilitated “fireside chat” style sessions with lots of time for participant questions.

You may access the schedule of speakers and registration information here .
GiveBIG - Early Giving
During these challenging times, we have immense hope for our region and communities.  We have hope because of our amazing LT community.  LT alumni are uniquely poised to work together across differences and across sectors to not only address our region's immediate needs, but also to look for ways to reset and rebuild our systems so they are more equitable and better serve the entire community.

There are many wonderful organizations to support during these unprecedented times, and we hope you consider making LT part of your charitable giving plans. If you'd like to support LT during this year's GiveBIG, you can make your gift here through early giving. We will also follow up next week during GiveBIG with opportunities to support LT.
