IFMA Member Spotlight
Andrew Steele
Senior Facilities Project Manager, Boeing
UW MS Construction Management | IFMA Foundation Scholarship (2015, 2020)
How did you get into Facility Management
While exploring degree programs at BYU, I discovered Facility Management and immediately knew it aligned with my interests—integrating people, systems, and space. I took classes from IFMA Fellow Jeff Campbell, worked on consulting projects under his mentorship, and joined the IFMA student chapter. I presented original research on lightbulb lifecycle costing at World Workplace 2015 and won the IFMA Foundation ePoster Competition. That early exposure set the trajectory for my career. I reconnected with IFMA as a grad student at the University of Washington, again earning a Foundation scholarship and expanding my research into comprehensive cost frameworks for smart building technologies.
How do you benefit from the IFMA and the Seattle Chapter?
IFMA has been a cornerstone in my professional development—providing scholarships, presentation opportunities, and a network of engaged, innovative professionals. The Seattle Chapter has given me a platform to bring academic insights into real-world discussions, especially around attracting the next generation of talent to the FM industry. Through IFMA, I’ve reengaged as a speaker (Seattle Chapter, May 2025; World Workplace, September 2025) and continue to collaborate on workforce development strategies, including internship program design from my role at Boeing. The networking connections are key as I look to develop new knowledge and research within this field. Find me on Episode 77 the IFMA Connected FM podcast where I talk about my IFMA WWP Session and some of those areas I am leading the industry in relevant industry research.
Any advice for new members?
Say yes to opportunities. Whether it's volunteering, presenting, or attending events, show up and stay curious. IFMA is a hub for passionate professionals, and the more you engage, the more value you’ll find.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spending time with my kids comes first. I love park days, swim lessons, and cheering on our UW Huskies football team. I also enjoy sharing what I’ve learned through writing and speaking, particularly on how technology is transforming the FM profession.

Mentorship Program
The Greater Seattle Chapter of IFMA Mentorship Program creates pathways to career success through the collaborative engagement between experienced and early career FM professionals.
In alignment with the greater strategy of the Greater Seattle Chapter of IFMA and Education Committee Charter, the Mentorship program serves as a member benefit, with shared value for both Mentors and Mentees. This program pairs Mentees with knowledgeable Mentors, providing tenured FM’s an opportunity to share their valuable knowledge to enhance the development of the next generation of industry professionals.
Participants also serve as IFMA Ambassadors, speaking to the benefits of a career in FM, IFMA credentials/programming, and connecting purpose with this line of work.

Benchmarking Updates
Congratulations Seattle! 96% Benchmarking Compliance
OSE is pleased to announce that more than 96% of required property owners have achieved compliance with the City’s benchmarking law for the 2024 reporting year. The deadline for reporting 2024 energy and emissions data was June 1, 2025, and the three-month enforcement grace period has now concluded.
| | |
Notices of Violation and Fines Issued
Property owners who failed to submit complete and accurate benchmarking reports to the City by Sept. 15 are now in violation. OSE has issued Notices of Violation (NOVs) with fines via certified mail to the building owner of record and their Registered Agent.
- $2000 penalty — buildings between 20,000 and 50,000 square feet
- $4000 penalty — buildings larger than 50,000 square feet
NOV recipients must respond to violations within 30 days by either submitting an appeal online at seattle.gov/energybenchmarkingappeal or paying the fine. If you own multiple non-compliant properties that received NOVs, you must submit a separate appeal for each property. Property owners who submit an appeal and bring their property into compliance within 30 days of receiving the Notice of Violation will have all fines mitigated.
Please note that properties which achieve benchmarking compliance after Sept. 15, 2025, but fail to submit an appeal or pay fines, have not resolved their violation. Check the benchmarking compliance portal to confirm your property’s reporting year 2024 compliance status. The OSE Director will conduct administrative review of submitted appeals and issue determinations to all appellants.

Clean Buildings Incentive Program
The City of Bellevue is helping large buildings (20,000+ sf) to reduce energy use, save on costs, and comply with WA State Clean Buildings Law. Free building energy services include energy benchmarking, scoping assessments, incentive navigation, and compliance reporting support – an estimated $18,000 value.

IFMA 2025 World Workplace
The Greater Seattle Chapter had an incredible experience at IFMA’s World Workplace this year! Our chapter was represented with 20 members at the conference. Highlights included the Welcome Reception hosted at U.S. Bank Stadium, engaging keynote speakers who inspired new ways of thinking about leadership and the future of facilities management, the Expo Hall where we met new and familiar faces, and a packed agenda of education sessions.
A special highlight was our own Andrew Steele’s presentation on Beyond Hardware: True
Costs of Technology Adoption in FM, which sparked thoughtful conversations and gave attendees practical insights to bring back to their organizations. Beyond the learning, our chapter gathered for a lively happy hour, strengthening connections and celebrating our shared successes and our member from Alaska, Kelley Tedd, was recognized as traveling the furthest for the conference and speaker Scott Bloom gave him a copy of his book.
The week was capped off with an exciting honor—our chapter received the IFMA Foundation's Workforce Initiative Partnership of Excellence Award. This recognition reflects our collective efforts to support the next generation of facility professionals and to champion workforce development in our region.
We are proud of our chapter’s impact and look forward to building on this momentum in the year ahead!
