It's time to put on our community scientist hats and rejoin our fellow concerned citizens to help conserve our endangered monarchs. Come join us at the RCRCD Greenbelt Monarch Habitat and become a community scientist gathering data on eggs, caterpillars and butterflies!

The habitat was established via a grant from the Wildlife Conservation Board of California. That grant concluded in 2023 and the RCRCD now funds the maintenance and community science program. The data collected goes on iNat, Western Milkweed Monarch Mapper and the Monarch Larval Monitoring Program.

To qualify to volunteer at this project you must watch a very short training video (to correctly identify instar stages in particular) and sign a waver. To obtain the video and waver you need to contact Michele Felix-Derbarmdiker.

Thank you for your support of this fun and important project!

Garden Tips for June

Maintenance

  • Set out traps for earwigs, slugs, and whiteflies.
  • Water after midnight and before 10am to reduce the chance of fungal infection and to conserve moisture.
  • Pinch off the top pair of leaves on all chrysanthemum shoots longer than 5" to keep pants bushy and to produce more flowers
  • Cut spent berry canes to the ground
  • Cut canna stems to the ground as they finish flowering; new stems will continue to appear.
  • Prune fruit bushes
  • Harvest vegetables promptly to encourage continues production
  • Dig and divide over-crowed irises and bulbs when the foliage dies off.
  • Remove spent flowers of day lilies, roses, and other blowers as they finished flowering.
  • Cut back lavender after flowering to promote a second bloom.
  • Trim faded crape myrtle flowers for more fall bloom
  • Pick up dropped fruit to prevent brown rot. Clean around trees
  • Pull weeds when they first appear.

Fertilize

  • Roses
  • Tie-up and fertilize new berry canes
