.Why Do Bikkurim Require a Basket?

Parshat Ki Tavo begins with the mitzvah of bikkurim—the offering of the first fruits:

And it will be, when you come into the land … that you shall take from the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you will bring from your land, which the L-rd, your G‑d, is giving you. And you shall put [them] into a basket and go to the place which the L-rd, your G‑d, will choose to have His Name dwell there.

Based on this verse, the Sifrei teaches that there is a requirement for the bikkurim to be placed into a vessel before being brought to Jerusalem. Indeed, this requirement is codified in halachah, with Maimonides stating:

Exposing the Young Genius?

rabbi-shneur-zalman image

When the Alter-Rebbe-to-be [Rabbi Shneur-Zalman] made his first journey to Mezritch, he was a young and recently married man, just 16 years of age, but his phenomenal accomplishments in the study of Torah were already famed throughout White Russia. Aside from his brilliance and erudition in the study of nigleh [the "revealed" Torah: Scripture, Talmud, Halacha], he served the Creator with the deep-felt devotion and awe of a man far more advanced in years.

He was also proficient in the writings of the holy Shelah [Rabbi Isaiah Horowitz 1560-1630] by heart, from beginning to end, and it was from the Shelah that he had adopted his mode of divine service. And yet, despite this, his broad mind was still not at ease, until he came to hear intriguing reportsf our holy Rebbe, the Maggid of Mezritch, successor to the Baal Shem Tov.

On the Haftarah: Rise and Shine

For the haftarah of Ki Tavo, From the Teachings of the Rebbe

By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz, the Rebbe's emissary to Temecula, CA. Rabbi Hurwitz has been rendered immobile by ALS. Unable to speak or type, he uses his eyes to write heartfelt thoughts on the weekly Torah portion. Please support the Hurwitz Family Fund.

This week we read the sixth  haftarah of consoling. It tells us what it will be like when  Moshiach comes and how special we are. Hidden in the words of the haftarah is the secret to bringing Moshiach sooner.

The haftarah begins: “Arise, shine, for your light has come.” The Baal Shem Tov explains that this verse is talking to Jewish spiritual leaders who set aside their own growth in  Torah and mitzvahs in order to give back to the community.

Fresh Seaweed Noodles Sashimi Salad Recipe

By Levana Kirschenbaum | 7/18/14

Fresh Seaweed Noodles. Umami Heaven. Fresh seaweed is getting increasingly available. You will be as pleased as I am to see that , in many supermarkets and in sushi restaurants, fresh seaweed turns up more often. It is true I haven’t seen fresh seaweed in any form other than salad, in other words, prepared, but the salad is natural and its components do not encroach on the preparation of a larger recipe, like the following dish. I know the seaweed bears a pesky resemblance to astroturf, but once you toss it into the other ingredients its garish greenness disperses and the color and flavor of the finished dish are deliciously funky. The miso imparts its fermented flavor, which works beautifully with all other flavors in the dish.

Three year old Rivka Goldstein walked over to a pregnant lady while waiting with her mother in the doctor’s office.

She inquisitively asks the lady, "Why is your stomach so big?"

"I’m having a baby" the lady replies.

With big innocent eyes, she asks, "Is the baby in your stomach?"

She says, "He sure is."

Then the little girl, with a puzzled look, asks, "Is it a good baby?"

She says, "Oh, yes. It's a real good baby."

With an even more surprised and shocked look, she asks...

"Then why did you eat him?"

"Everyone must regard himself and the world as evenly poised between good and guilt...If he performed a good deed, he has shifted the balance of his fate, and that of the entire world to good, and has brought deliverance and salvation upon himself and upon them all."

-Maimonides, Laws of Teshuvah Ch. 3, Law 4
