Greetings!

Celebrate Mother's Day this year with all those that have provided you love and support through good times and bad. Let all the "mothering" types in your life know how much they mean to you by talking to them about breast health, encouraging them to have yearly mammograms, and doing a Breast Self-Exam (BSE) every month.

Dense breast tissue, or dense breasts, is a condition 40% of women have. In March 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued new guidelines on reporting dense breasts to patients & healthcare providers. Watch a video by Dr. Lisa Sheppard about Dense Breasts and read more about the new Federal policies below.

Do Dense Breasts Run in Families?
Dense breast tissue, also known as dense breast, is found in about 4 out of 10 women. Sometimes this is due to a genetic link. Listen to Lisa Sheppard, MD Radiologist as she talks about this sometimes misunderstood condition.

New FDA Mammography Guidelines for Patients with Dense Breast
On March 9, 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated its guidelines requiring all mammography centers to notify patients & healthcare providers of an individual's breast density. Unfortunately, it is difficult to accurately see breast tissue with dense breasts. However, this added layer of reporting will allow patients and healthcare providers to find additional avenues of routine monitoring of breast tissue.

The FDA's most recent guidelines on breast ultrasound will require all 50 states to adopt notification requirements by September 2024. New Jersey was among the first states to implement these guidelines back in 2014. Dr. Sheppard served as a member of the working group leading the rollout.

To get more information, ask your healthcare provider about these new guidelines.
