MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

Spring has officially arrived this week, and we embrace its promise of renewed life and gifts as the earth wakes up following a challenging winter. We’ve had a busy week with opportunities to engage in conversations about our educational mission, academic initiatives, equity, civic concerns, support for our students, and conversations on our purpose and obligations.

As the semester progresses, our primary focus is on the teaching and learning, academic and student support areas to ensure continued success for our students. I offer a very special thank you to our Provost who is working diligently with OAA and academic leaders on the creation of summer and fall schedules that are responsive to our academic programs and the needs of our students. I understand that a student survey was taken, and robust participation was seen. I hope midterms went well and know that additional support is being made available to our students, as needed, to ensure a successful semester.

Thank you for all you do each and every day to facilitate the journey for so many, including our very own as professionals.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

A POEM

“Wild Geese”

By Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT DAINMA MARTINEZ

Spring Arrival

Happy Friday, Hostos! Hopefully, you had a wonderful and blessed week. Spring is here, and the deadline to apply for graduation is close (April 5). So as always, for those who are graduating, do a check-in with your advisor if you have not yet done so and stay informed about your status. The Registrar's Office is in charge of this! Please email them at GRADUATIONAUDIT@hostos.cuny.edu or call 718-518-6771.

 Other important things to consider:

● Are you transferring? Please visit Transfer Services on the first level of the D-Building (D-101) or call them at 718-518-4319.

● Do you need food assistance? We got you covered at our food pantry, available by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, contact Madeline Cruz at 718-518-4141 or email mcruz@hostos.cuny.edu.

As the days pass, I always like to say a few things to encourage others. Don’t lose yourself in the sea of worry. Remember that we are all here to grow and to continue with our goals and ambitions. Remember to persist.

I want to end by sharing a motto I frequently share: We are all trees and are meant to grow. Branches do not interfere with each other but grow around and with each other.

Enjoy the weekend and smile with the sun.

Sincerely,

Dainma

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, ASSESSMENT, AND RESEARCH (OIERA)

Cohort Analysis of English and Math Gateway Enrollment and Completion

In addition to mid-year progress updates, unit-level assessment, and a final report, research briefs (4x a year) drafted by OIERA are another way Hostos is tracking and communicating progress toward the 2023-28 Strategic Plan goals:

Goal 3, Strategy 1 of the Hostos Strategic Plan is “Facilitate successful student navigation through Gateway courses,” acknowledging the importance of gateway success in the students’ first year. In addition to correlating strongly with retention, gateway completion ensures students gain competency in foundational skills applied across general education and degree-specific courses, in addition to supporting career preparedness.

Anders Stachelek is the lead researcher on a research brief that analyzes gateway English and math outcomes for the 903 Fall 2022 First-Time Freshmen (full-time and part-time). The analysis includes their attempt and completion rates in English and mathematics gateway courses from Fall 2022 through Summer 2023 and consists of both aggregated and disaggregated data across the course-taking and achievement patterns in these gateway courses. The Fall 22 cohort analysis was used to develop a model that can now be applied to subsequent cohorts of first-time freshmen.

The data are what OIERA is describing as “action-informing” — in addition to providing details about an important first-year milestone, analysis of gateway course enrollment and completion data can be used by SDEM and OAA to develop communication plans to students about (re-)enrollment in gateway courses, seeking academic and other resources to support their success, and ultimately to improve gateway completion rates in students’ first year at Hostos.

Student Loan Relief Opportunities: Deadline Approaching!

This update comes from the Office of Senator Gustavo Rivera.

The Biden-Harris Administration announced further student loan relief last month through President Biden’s Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan. The Administration has now approved debt cancellation for nearly 3.9 million hard-working Americans totaling almost $138 billion in relief.

Moving forward, borrowers who meet the eligibility criteria for forgiveness under the SAVE Plan will have their loans automatically discharged with no action needed on their part. Borrowers who believe they meet these criteria are strongly encouraged to immediately sign up for SAVE at StudentAid.gov/save. Borrowers can learn more about forgiveness programs at StudentAid.gov/forgiveness.

The deadline to consolidate federal student loans is approaching, and the Community Service Society can assist you! Consolidation allows you to combine one or more federal education loans into a new Direct Consolidation loan. You may also be able to benefit from the IDR account adjustment which aims to bring thousands of borrowers closer to loan forgiveness by providing more opportunities to earn qualifying payment credits.

Visit CSS’s EDCAP website for great resources to navigate student debt and to learn more about these programs! The deadline to consolidate non-direct student loans or loans with multiple payment histories (via studentaid.gov) is April 30, 2024.

International Transgender Day of Visibility

Dear Hostos Community,

On March 31, we recognize International Transgender Day of Visibility, an opportunity to celebrate and affirm our community's diverse experiences and identities. At Hostos, we strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of gender identity or expression. Transgender Day of Visibility is not only about recognition; it involves empowerment and advocacy, amplifying the voices of transgender and non-binary individuals, standing in solidarity with them, and advocating for their rights and equal treatment.

As we commemorate this day, let us continue to educate ourselves, challenge harmful stereotypes, and actively support transgender and non-binary members of our community. Together, we can create a Hostos campus where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.

Warm regards,

Phil Oliveri

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY

“Today’s Walk”

By Kathy Russell

I will walk slowly through this day;

I leave what is not needed behind from yesterday.

I will treasure all the knowledge to move forward.

What I do today will not change or erase the past.

I move on knowing that today I will do differently than before.

If I fail, there will be another tomorrow and a future tomorrow for hope.

Keeping Pests and Rodents Away

Spring is officially here and we have experienced teasingly warm temperatures for a few days already. Couple the warmer days with all the construction occurring around the Hostos campus, and we are seeing more pests and rodents emerge. Our Environmental Health and Safety Officer, Marya Shuksta, reminds us of how we can help reduce their presence in our campus spaces and what to do if we do see them.

A very important thing to keep in mind is that we need to eliminate any food and nesting sources for rodents. This includes not only garbage left behind but also tiny spills and crumbs one may not notice are there, so we must be diligent about not leaving any such treats around. That way, the rodents will have no choice but to go for the bait/traps set up by the exterminator. If you notice any spills/messes left behind, please notify facilities immediately so that they can address the issue immediately. Below are some additional measures we can take to prevent pest sightings on campus:

  • Store food in airtight containers and keep them in the fridge. Rodents have a remarkable sense of smell and can identify food even in tightly wrapped plastic or Ziploc bags.

  • All appliances, such as toasters, ovens, stoves, microwaves, and refrigerators, should be cleaned daily.

  • Garbage should be removed at least once daily.

  • Be mindful of paper and cardboard boxes as well; rodents use these items for nesting.

  • Notify facilities of any sightings of pests or pest droppings.

Our pest control protocol includes weekly servicing by an exterminator (every Thursday). Whenever we receive a pest concern or sighting, the exterminator is notified and will service the affected space.

The exterminator does not use a spray; they use tamper-resistant bait stations, which are never placed in open areas. Placement of bait stations depends on what the exterminator observes at the time of inspection and is unique to each situation, but can be behind shelves, under radiators, etc. The inspection also includes identifying any holes and patching them up. For large holes, facilities/maintenance is notified to close them off.

Please keep these recommendations in mind, and with your help, we can continue to make it a less attractive campus for pests and rodents.

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT (CEWD)

CEWD’s NYSDOL Registered Community Health Worker Apprenticeship Program Helps Engage Employers

Hostos CEWD has long been committed to providing students with high-quality Community Health Worker (CHW) training and partnering with employers to help them meet their CHW workforce needs. Hostos CEWD first developed its CHW training program in 2012 as part of CUNY CareerPATH, an initiative funded by the US Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant. In 2013, the Education Department and OAA signed a credit articulation agreement to allow CEWD’s CHW students to earn up to nine (9) academic credits toward an A.S. degree in Community Health at Hostos. In Spring 2017, Hostos CEWD expanded its program by establishing a New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) Registered CHW Apprenticeship Program. The apprenticeship program includes 144 hours of didactic education and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training (OJT).

CEWD’s NYSDOL Registered CHW Apprenticeship Program has allowed the division to partner with employers who want to fill vacancies by having their staff participate in the CHW apprenticeship program. To date, CEWD has worked with employers to register 34 individuals in its CHW Apprenticeship Program. Seven (7) CHWs completed the apprenticeship program via a pilot program CEWD established with the Montefiore Hudson Valley Collaborative. Twenty-seven (27) CHWs have registered via CEWD’s collaboration with Montefiore Albert Einstein. Eight (8) Montefiore Albert Einstein employees completed the apprenticeship program in the first cohort. Currently, 19 Montefiore Albert Einstein employees are part of the second cohort. New hires received a starting salary of $50,000 plus.

CEWD’s long-term goal is to increase the number of skilled Community Health Workers locally and regionally and create an industry “gold standard” for training CHWs. CEWD receives both private and public funding to support its CHW program.

For more information on the CHW program, please contact Jaunia Clarke at jclarke@hostos.cuny.edu.
