5th Sunday Offerings!

This Sunday, June 30, we will begin a new tradition at Stowe Community Church, “5th Sunday Offerings”. On every 5th Sunday, we are reminded that we all have something to offer, we encourage people to use our offering time to, not only make monetary contributions (those are certainly still welcome and needed), but also to provide an offering of another sort.

For instance,

           A note to the pastor

           A prayer

           A suggestion

A gift card for a homeless family

A visitor slip from the bulletin

           A message of praise/thanks

Mansions of the Lord (2023, arr. Wallace) | The West Point Glee Club & Tabernacle Choir

Mansions of the Lord!

Last week the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square uploaded a video version of the "Mansions of the Lord." After the singing stops and the organ takes over, I was surprised to see an aerial view of Stowe Community Church!! I shared this with Pastor Dan and he added:

"My sermon [this Sunday] is based on the phrase from Psalm 23 “The House of the Lord” and having Stowe Community Church depicted as one of the Mansions of the Lord by the Tabernacle is such an honor and blessing!"

June Congregational Meeting

Congregational Meeting Summary!

Thank you to everyone who attended our Special Congregation Meeting last Sunday! We had a great turnout of 60-80 engaged members and friends in person, with an additional 22 who voted online before the meeting.

Following a well-received presentation by Pastor Dan, Scott Noble, and Walter Frame, members voted in favor of two key items:

  1. Stowe Community Church will launch a capital campaign of at least $1.65 million. This initiative aims to address deferred maintenance and mechanical issues, enhance the church's efficiency and environmental footprint, and install new systems and technologies as detailed in the presentation and provided materials (including the online flipbook). Notes: *An additional $150,000 was added by in-person attendees to ensure sufficient funds to cover potential cost escalations. **During our quiet phase the Capital Campaign Committee has received pledges of over 70% of goal for the campaign.
  2. Members authorized the Development Committee and Church to proceed with each capital assessment project once the necessary funding is secured. Updates will be provided to the congregation every six months.

Special thanks to our Capital Campaign Committee: Nancy Jeffries Dwyer, Co-Chair; Walt Frame, Co-Chair; Pastor Dan; Matt Anderson; and Phil Bongiorno, as well as our Development Committee: Scott Noble, Chair; Pastor Dan; Skip Wentz; and Charlie Burnham, who have dedicated hundreds of hours to this campaign. Also, thanks to our wonderful staff for the incredible brunch they prepared for us.

If you have any questions about the vote, please feel free to email me at president@stowecommunitychurch.org

Lastly, please consider making a pledge to our campaign. The materials can be found on our website at www.stowecommunitychurch.org.

Meet Our New Members: The Reilly Family!

Heidi and Ben

Meet Heidi, Ben and their daughter Nell (1.5) Reilly. Heidi grew up in a suburb of Chicago and Ben is from Southborough, MA. While we met and lived in Boston for a few years, we always had our sights on moving to Vermont in hopes of taking advantage of the outdoor lifestyle and to be closer to family and friends. We were afforded the opportunity in January 2022, when we both were granted permission to work remotely. It's been an incredible experience thus far and we're thrilled to be able to raise our daughter in such a special community like Stowe.

Heidi works in Go-to-Market Strategy for New Balance and Ben is Counsel in the Litigation Department at Goodwin Procter. When we're not working or chasing after Nell, you'll find us biking, hiking, running or skiing.

We're so grateful to be a part of the Stowe Community Church and have appreciated the warm welcome we've received. We look forward to getting to know the members and getting more involved in the future.

Meet Our New Members: Phil and Sandi Kuhl!

Sandi and Phil Kuhl

Sandi and Philip Kuhl just became members at SCC after attending when visiting Stowe for twenty years! They love all things outdoors and split their time between Philadelphia and Stowe. Delighted to be part of the vibrant community of Jesus followers, they eagerly anticipate seeing how God continues to shape and grow Stowe Community Church.

WF July 4th

Upcoming Women's Fellowship Activities!

We are looking forward to seeing many of you on July 4th. The main street parade is at noon. SCC is greeting visitors and giving out cookies (donations accepted by visitors).

Women’s Fellowship will be there starting at 10:00 am and ending around 2:00 pm. We could use your help. Signup sheets are in the narthex for either being at greeter or making cookies.

We are planning a hike for Sunday July 14th at 2:00. It’s about a two hour hike along the cross country ski trails at Stowe Mountain resort. It is a moderate hike but relatively flat. More details on this later.

We are helping with coffee hour after Sunday morning services throughout the summer. If you can help one Sunday morning that would be helpful. Signup sheets are in narthex.

Kenya Food

Special Offering for Kenyan Orphans!

A Mission Group is going to visit Kenya and hoping to bring some funds to buy supplies for the Kenyan Orphans’ school. See the link below for the list of items they need.  A special offering will be taken on July 7, 2024 that will enable the Mission Group to do this. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Checks can be issued to Stowe Community Church with the Kenyan Orphans in the byline.

Parable

Parable Discussions Start July 14th!

“I Never Thought of it That Way Before”

A discussion of the Parables of Jesus

Jesus frequently used storytelling techniques in his teachings; some of those are called parables, meaning, a short fictional narrative comparing one thing to another, with a moral or religious purpose. Some of Jesus’ most compelling ideas were taught in parables.

Over the six weeks, we will meet on Sunday mornings after the regular service to learn about and discuss these brief and moving stories that have endured through millennia. For more information, contact Steven Ford stevefordhome@gmail.com

  • Meeting time 10:45 – 11:45. Bring coffee if you’d like.
  • No need to bring a Bible. These stories are very short and (mostly) familiar
  • Questions and “I don’t get it” are welcome
  • First Meeting July 14, “The Parable of the Forgiving Father”

Green Tip for June!

Did you know that washing your clothes in hot water is just plain bad: bad for your clothes and bad for the earth? And no one here wants to be bad to the earth, right? Washing your clothes in cold water (even clothes benefit from a cold plunge!) is estimated to save up to 80% of energy per load of laundry and up to 500 pounds of carbon dioxide per year1. How much is 500 pounds of CO2, you ask? Well it would take 10 fully grown trees working all day, every day for an entire year to absorb all that CO2 2. Do you have 10 mature trees in your yard to dedicate to this fulltime task? Well you live in Vermont; you probably do. But most Americans do not! So run your laundry in cold water and give your maple tree a break.

1 A cleaner way to clean. 2 Give your tree a hug!

Soul Keeping

Try Summer Devotions!

How are you doing with that "to-do" list? Is your email box full? How many social media apps are you looking at? Is your mind whirling even when you try to relax?

The pace of life we keep can often be exhausting and can lead to a constant, hurried state. John Ortberg, in his book, Soul Keeping, talks about the fact that when we are hurried all the time we cannot be fully present to others and we become unavailable to God.

Summer is a great time to slow the "hurry" of life and reconnect with God. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • If you have been neglecting your devotional life, try carving out even 5 minutes to just breathe and be with God.
  • Talk a walk and get in touch with nature again.
  • Make a list of ways you are blessed and give thanks to God.
  • Have a "fast" from social media or email for a day (or even a couple of hours) and see how much time you gain back to renew.
  • Call up that friend or relative you have been meaning to talk to and just listen to their story.
  • Do a craft, sport, or hobby; something you can "lose yourself" in, letting go of the "to-do" list for a while.

Lamoille home health and hospice

Mission of the Month: Lamoille Home Health and Hospice!

During the month of June, our Mission focus will be on Lamoille Home Health and Hospice.

Lamoille Home Health and Hospice's mission is to support health, independence and dignity through quality care in the home. The Agency believes that the highest standards of health and end-of-life care are fundamental rights. To fulfill this commitment to Lamoille County residents the Agency: provides high quality in-home care during episodes of illness, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach; works cooperatively with other organizations to provide a comprehensive health care system; respects the rights of patients and their designated helpers/families in making decisions about their health care; continuously assesses services and respond to the changing health care needs of the community. The Hospice Program uses a team approach to enhance the quality of life for the terminally ill and to provide support for their loved ones.

Are you looking for a rewarding experience? Consider becoming a Hospice Volunteer. Hospice volunteers provide much needed comfort to those who are receiving or in need of hospice services. Volunteers play a vital role in hospice care and are trained to understand the needs of the terminally ill patient. Volunteers also play an active role in providing respite for patient caregivers as the needs of the hospice patient can be great. Volunteers offer companionship to the patients and understanding to their caregivers.

LHH&H will be offering Hospice Volunteer Training starting September 7, 2023 and continuing each Tuesday and Thursday evening from 5:30 p.m.—8 p.m. through September 28. The training is held at Lamoille Home Health & Hospice, 54 Farr Avenue, Morrisville. There is no cost to you and all materials are provided. Please contact Charlene at 802-888-4561 or ccamire@lhha.org if interested. Space is limited.

Musical Selections

The UGA Hodgson Singers - I've been in the storm so long / ICCC 2023 / Final Concert

Oh, Wow! "I've Been in the Storm So Long" is a great African American spiritual. However this performance, particularly the soloist, takes it to a higher level! Must listening!

Mixed Ensemble: There Will Be Rest by Frank Ticheli

"There Will Be Rest" True to its name I believe this would make great meditation music! I wasn't familiar with this piece or the composer, Frank Ticheli, but if this is an example, he writes great choral music!
