MAYOR MARKLEY'S TOP 5 THINGS TO KNOW THIS WEEK:
1) It was my great honor to be part of the 51st Annual Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony at the Maritime Gig Festival last weekend. The entire ceremony was incredibly moving; from the words and prayers of the Priest, to the songs of the bagpipes, the procession down Jerisich Dock, and especially being out in our beautiful Harbor to circle our majestic fishing fleet.
Words cannot describe the looks on the faces of our fisherman and their families - of which so many shouted out words of thanks and, "We've waited three years for this!" To have our community back together again in this way was very emotional and so special. Thank you to everyone who was part of this amazing day! We pray for the health and safety of our fisherman as they head out to sea and we can't wait to say, "Welcome home!"
2) Congratulations to the Wastewater Treatment Plant! They are receiving the 2021 "Wastewater Treatment Plant Outstanding Performance Award" for the 5th consecutive year, and for the 15th time in 17 years. It takes diligent operators and a strong management team, working effectively together, to achieve this high level of performance. We are so proud of our team!
3) Thank you to all who participated in this year's Diaper Derby! Although the race ends today, you can still make a contribution to help a family provide for their child. To see how all of the teams performed, or to make a donation, please visit https://babycorner.org/diaper-derby/.
4) I am excited to be attending the Association of Washington Cities Conference from June 21-24 in Vancouver, WA. There are many important topics we will be learning about and I'm looking forward to meeting many of my colleagues across the state that I have only met on Zoom! I will be sure to provide a recap in a couple of weeks.
5) The increase in our population comes with an increase in requests for Code Enforcement service. City Council approved our first full-time Code Enforcement Officer in the 2022 budget, and we are working diligently to have that position staffed. Whether a complaint about trees, stormwater, noise, or building without permits, we have a code enforcement process for residents to follow. For more information on that process and to find a copy of the Code Enforcement Action Request Form, please visit the Code Enforcement Website at: http://www.cityofgigharbor.net/206/Code-Enforcement
In the meantime, I want to give a special shout out to Officer Adam Blodgett for doing such a great job, even with only 16-hours per week dedicated to enforcement!

HARBOR ARBOR
The Gig Harbor Arts Commission is sponsoring the artistic carving and/or embellishment of select tree snags throughout the city. A “snag” is the term for a dead tree or a tree that has been cut down to a safe height and left to decay naturally. Most of the trees selected for this project will have been affected by laminated root rot, making the condition of the tree and the longevity of the art unknown.
Funding for the Harbor Arbor Art was approved by the City Council as part of the 2022 City budget.
HARBORVIEW SIDEWALK
The Gig Harbor Arts Commission announces an opportunity for an artist or artists to create and install one or more art pieces in the sidewalk on Harborview Drive at its intersection with Stinson Street in downtown Gig Harbor.
Proposals are due by September 7, 2022.
