Looking Beyond Symptom Relief:

How Interventional Psychiatry and ACT Work Together

There’s a lot of excitement at Lakes Center Mental Health Network as we prepare to open the Lakes Interventional Therapies Center. Interventional psychiatry introduces innovative treatments to bring hope to patients that have had limited success with traditional medication and psychotherapy.

For me, innovation is about more than having the latest technology. It means asking: How can we combine the best treatments with care that truly helps people build meaningful lives? That’s one reason Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has become increasingly important in my work with patients and why we are synergistically combining it with our highly effective SPRAVATO® program as part of our offerings in our new Lakes Intervention Therapies Center.

When Treatment Opens a Door

Interventional psychiatry is creating new options for people who haven’t found enough relief with traditional treatments. At Lakes, we’ve had tremendous success with SPRAVATO intervention in our Lakes Depression Center, and our new center represents another step forward.

Reducing symptoms isn’t the same as building a meaningful life, however, when someone begins feeling better, new questions can emerge such as: What matters to me now? How do I reconnect with my life? Where do I go from here? That’s where psychotherapy can fill that void.

Since January, I’ve had the opportunity to receive additional ACT training. I first met Dr. Robyn Walser at an ACT Boot Camp. She has remained a valuable training and educational resource for Lakes Center, which offers it as a therapeutic option. ACT focuses on psychological flexibility, helping people respond differently to difficult thoughts and feelings while continuing to move toward the people, activities, and values that matter most.

Research supports utilizing ACT for depression, anxiety, and trauma-related symptoms. ACT has also been incorporated into emerging areas of mental health research, including psilocybin-assisted therapy for major depressive disorder, where it has been used as the therapeutic framework in a model developed at Yale and elsewhere. The two treatment options have positive synergies that make them ideal for pairing. Because of this, LITC will be offering ACT with enhanced SPRAVATO.

For me, the connection is simple: An intervention may open the door for change, but psychotherapy can help someone decide what to do once that door opens. ACT helps provide answers to one of my favorite questions: If treatment gives you some space from your symptoms, what do you want to do with that space? Recovery and remission are not only about which symptoms improve. It’s also about what someone does move toward.

Beyond the Therapy Room

ACT has also shaped my work outside of patient care. I use ACT principles in many of my psychological safety and resilience speaking engagements, particularly with healthcare professionals, first responders, community leaders, and others working in high-demand, high-stress environments. The idea is similar: make room for difficult experiences, stay connected to what matters, and keep moving forward with purpose.

Building the Next Chapter at Lakes Center

Before bringing new interventional treatments and technologies to Lakes Center, we wanted to understand and experience them ourselves. We didn’t want to add something simply because it was new. We asked: Does this add meaningful value to someone’s overall mental health care plan?

I’ve been open about my own lived experience with mental health, so this is personal for me, too. When someone trusts us with their care, I believe we have a responsibility to be thoughtful about what we offer. That’s why I’m excited about the additional options coming to the Lakes Interventional Therapies Center. They aren’t meant to replace what is already working. They give us more tools for individualize care.

With Dr. Lynne Lyons leading the way, we’re building a space for innovation while keeping the person receiving care at the center.

Interventional psychiatry gives us new ways to address symptoms. ACT helps us keep each person’s values, relationships, and purpose at the heart of their journey. Psychotherapy matters. Medication matters. Technology matters. Most importantly, the person receiving treatment matters.

Coming Next Month

Next month, our therapist Catherine Dufresne, LMSW, will take a closer look at Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, psychological flexibility, and how ACT can help us navigate difficult thoughts and feelings as we move toward a more meaningful life.

Why Mental Fitness Is Just as Important as Physical Fitness

Most of us understand the importance of exercising our bodies, but our minds also need regular care. Just like physical fitness, mental fitness is built through small, intentional actions that strengthen resilience over time.

Mental fitness is not about avoiding stress. It is about developing healthy ways to respond when challenges arise. By practicing positive habits consistently, we can improve our ability to adapt, recover, and maintain emotional well being.

This month, consider strengthening your mental fitness by:

  • Challenging negative thoughts with more balanced perspectives
  • Taking a few minutes each day to reflect or recharge
  • Building routines that support both your mind and body
  • Asking for support when you need it

Mental wellness is not a destination. It is something we build one day at a time.

Empowering Expectant Families

On September 15, 2026, Dr. Davis proudly represented Lakes Center by hosting our booth at the Perinatal Mental Health & Resources Fair at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with expectant families and community members, helping them discover vital resources, build their support villages, and feel empowered at every step of their pregnancy journey.

Mental Health Tip:

Practice Responding Instead of Reacting

Stressful moments happen every day. Taking a brief pause before responding when emotions run high can help you communicate more clearly and make decisions you feel good about later.

The next time you feel frustrated or overwhelmed:

  • Take one slow breath before speaking
  • Ask yourself what outcome you want from the conversation
  • Focus on understanding before responding
  • Remember that a thoughtful response is often more effective than an immediate reaction

A brief pause can strengthen relationships and reduce stress.

Mental Health Tip:

Create a "Brain Dump" Before Bed

Clear your mind before you sleep by writing down tomorrow's to-do list.

If your mind races when you lie down at night, try spending five minutes writing down everything that's on your mind. You do not need to organize it perfectly. Simply getting your thoughts onto paper can help reduce mental clutter and make it easier to relax.

Try including:

  • Tasks you need to complete
  • Appointments or reminders
  • Things that are worrying you
  • Ideas you do not want to forget

Your notebook can hold onto those thoughts so your mind doesn't have to.

Limited-License Psychologist

David Rigo is a psychotherapist who works with a broad range of individuals and couples. Mr. Rigo completed his Clinical Psychology graduate studies in 2003 and went on to complete the two-year Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute.

In his work, Mr. Rigo takes an active, collaborative approach. This involves looking closely at patterns – both longstanding and newly emerging – that shape how one moves through the world. He enjoys working with a diverse range of individuals with varied backgrounds but brings a particular sensitivity to the experiences of boys and men. Many grow up without spaces where their unique inner world, desires, strivings, and impulses are understood, or where the very notion of what it means to be a man is unclear.
