How are we addressing our inpatient capacity and LOS challenges?
Everyone is feeling the growing pains of our expanding clinical enterprise. The problems are more easily stated (e.g., we don't have enough beds) than the solutions to address them. Over the past several months, a multidisciplinary team from the adult hospital held several working sessions to focus on ways to improve our "inefficient and insufficiently coordinated patient flow processes at UCSFMC which result in long wait times, lack of patient access to timely care, reduced quality of care, low patient satisfaction, physician and staff frustration, and negative financial impact." Does that problem statement resonate with your experiences? Please review the recent presentation at a Medical Directors meeting to understand more about the improvement work ahead.

Please join the many festivities planned to celebrate National Hospital & Nurses week from May 8-12th. It's a wonderful opportunity to recognize and thank all of the individuals -- nurses, physicians, AHPs, therapists, case managers, social workers, engineers, food services, hospitality, volunteers and many others -- who help take care of patients at UCSF Health.
This month's Schwartz Rounds will take place on May 14th, 12-1 p.m. at Parnassus, N-225, and will feature "Confronting Healthcare Barriers in ECMO"; as with other Schwartz Rounds, the goal is to foster an open discussion about the emotional impact of caring for patients.
