“An understanding of the natural world and what’s in it is a source of not only a great curiosity but great fulfillment.”

—David Attenborough

As I awoke to do my morning pages I remember with great love and fondness my wonderful Grandmother. She was actually born on Earth Day before there was such a designation. However, I learned so much through her love of the feeling, sensual world. I grew up in the heart of Los Angeles, with tree lined streets and ethnic markets together with farmers markets. I remember being totally enthralled as we made our way through one particular Italian market in Los Angeles which I think initiated my love of Italian culture and food. We would walk into the market - dim lit, the aroma of wonderful natural cheeses and meats; sawdust on the floor and glass cases of food, trimmed by what looked like a dark cherry wood; I can see this as though it was yesterday. I also remember being mesmerized when I experienced my Grandma cooking our meals for the evening; making her own pasta before there was such a thing as pasta makers and the beautiful flow with which she created. I felt like I was in a slow motion, and totally of the moment experience which I so loved. I guess that was my first experience in what I would call being in that sacred zen space.

And…my Grandfather would take me to the farmers market - where the fruits and vegetables looked like they were glorious giants from Jack in the Beanstalk. My eyes widened as I looked upon these jewels of the Earth that we got to bring home and enjoy. He was also the man who loved to explore and discover new places to visit. It was through my Grandpa that I had the privilege to see my first Native American cliff dwelling; obviously spurring my interest for rock art and ruins and Native American culture.

And…my amazing Mom who always made sure we got our picnic times either at Griffith Park or with other friends who had beautiful gardens! Quite an amazing and wonderful childhood!

So as a child I got to take part in the magic of what delights could be found in the natural world and the jewels of the Earth.
