Shemini Atzeret coincides with Shabbat, thus the Torah reading expands to “Aser Te’aser.” Rabbi Yochanan (Taanit 9a) homiletically reads those words as “Aser bishvil she-tit’asher—tithe so that you will grow rich.” It’s the one mitzvah with which we are permitted to “test” Hashem, who promises in response to “open the windows of Heaven.” We had a lot of rain this Succot; may that opening of the heavens anticipate future sponsorship.
On Shabbat we do not recite the traditional “yehi ratzon” farewell to the succah this year. We take our leave without a word—content that we are building the ultimate dwelling, temporary as it may be, here in Westhampton Beach.
