California Legislature Calls a Special Election for November 4, 2025

On August 21 and August 22, 2025 the California State Legislature approved legislation calling for a Statewide Special Election on November 4, 2025 and to place an initiative on this ballot. Known as Proposition 50, this initiative would introduce new U.S. congressional maps in California (for the U.S. House of Representatives only) for 2026, 2028 and 2030. The Legislature also approved a budget package to fund the special election.

In the coming days and weeks, the Contra Costa Elections team will be sharing important logistical information about this election with local residents at ContraCostaVote.gov and on our social media.

Some key dates:

• State Voter Information Guide mailed out/online: by September 20th
• County Voter Information Guide and Vote-by-Mail ballot sent to registered voters: by October 6th
• Contra Costa Elections Office opens for in-person registration & voting: October 6th
• Deadline for registering to vote online via RegisterToVote.ca.gov: October 20th
• Regional Early Voting Sites open for in-person late registration & voting: October 31st
• Polling places open: Election Day, November 4th (7am to 8pm)
• Vote-by-Mail ballots must be postmarked by November 4th or received in our secure dropboxes by 8:00 PM on November 4th

In order to vote in the upcoming

election, you must be registered to

vote in your county of residence. You must update your registration if

you have moved or changed your

name (married, divorced, etc.).

You can check your voter

registration status on our website at

www.contracostavote.gov by clicking on the “My Voting Information” button.

If you are not registered to vote, you have several options. You can register online at https://registertovote.ca.gov, or

complete a voter registration card

available at most post offices, city

halls, and libraries throughout

Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder Elections Department is a National Voter Registration Day Partner Again in 2025

The Contra Costa County Elections Division is gearing up for National Voter Registration Day which coincides with California High School Voter Education Weeks. Teams of County Elections staff are scheduled to visit over 20 locations during the last two weeks of September to bring information about registering to vote and voting on site to schools and CBOs. Staff will bring a “pop-up” registration office to each location.

National Voter Registration Day 2025 is on September 16^th and is the kickoff for California High School Voter Education Weeks which go through the end of September.

National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. First observed in 2012, it quickly gained momentum and is celebrated nationwide each year. More than 5 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday to date. California High School Voter Education Weeks provide an opportunity for high schools and their students to partner with County Elections Officials to promote civic education and participation on campus and foster an environment that cultivates lifelong voters and active citizens.
