Allan Arkush moved to Westport thirteen years ago, in order to live somewhere in between his two offices, one in Binghamton, N.Y., where he has been a professor in the Department of Judaic Studies since 1987, and one in New York City, at the headquarters of the foundation that publishes the magazine of which he is the Senior Contributing Editor, the Jewish Review of Books.
Allan received his B.A. at Cornell University and his Ph.D. in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University. Before coming to Binghamton in 1987 he taught briefly at Colgate University and the University of Texas at Dallas. Over the years, he has held fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard and Princeton. He is the author of Moses Mendelssohn and the Enlightenment, the translator of several important books on Jewish history, and has written numerous articles in journals as diverse as the Review of Politics, Modern Judaism, and Israel Studies.
Allan doesn’t do much besides read and write and walk and talk.
Allan and his wife Bonnie have one daughter, who lives together with her husband and two sons in Trumbull.
