Ingrown toenails, otherwise known as paronychias, can be much more than just annoying. Often times caused by improper cutting of toenails, the leading edge of the toenail can begin to grow into the surrounding flesh causing pain, inflammation and infection.
Couple this with conditions like diabetes and peripheral arterial disease, and the effects can be devastating. For the normal healthy patient, it is highly recommended to cut toenails straight across to avoid developing ingrown toenails.
But for anyone with compromising conditions like diabetes, poor circulation or neurological disorders, it is recommended that they be seen by a podiatrist for that type of toenail care. That way they can keep their toes happy and healthy.
