In the movie of your life, you are the writer, producer, director, and star.
Think of your mind as the writer, your heart as the producer, your spirit as the director, and your body as the star.
Each part has an important role to play. When they work together, you become more connected to the deeper wisdom within you and more capable of creating a life that feels aligned with who you truly are.
The way to transform your spirit is to embody it as your director. It’s always offering direction but with so many distractions it can be hard to hear it. Sometimes, if you’re not hearing it, you may need to ask for it.
Asking for Direction
After being in a relationship with Michael for many years, we decided to live together at his beach house in California. During the first year of our cohabitation, I found myself getting triggered.
Being triggered is uncomfortable. I knew I needed direction about what to do, so I went for a walk on the beach and began to pray out loud.
As I walked, I could see dolphins surfing the waves nearby. Suddenly, it occurred to me to ask for a very specific kind of direction.
I said, “If I’m meant to stay in this relationship, I would like to see two dolphins jumping together. If I’m meant to go, show me one dolphin jumping.”
Then I stood facing the ocean.
My eyes filled with tears as I waited, not knowing if I would receive any direction at all.
And then it happened.
Right in front of me, I saw two dolphins jumping together, over and over again.
In that moment, I felt heard, seen, and supported. I was overwhelmed with gratitude that I had been given such a clear message. That’s when the tears began to flow.
Soon afterward, I was led to the book Getting the Love You Want by Harville Hendrix. The book helped me understand why we can become so triggered in our intimate relationships. Hendrix explains that we often unconsciously choose romantic partners who have traits like our childhood caregivers, giving us an opportunity to bring all of our unresolved childhood wounds into awareness.
The relationship can then become a place where those wounds are activated—but also a place where they can begin to heal through conscious communication, empathy, and understanding.
The book introduces the Imago approach, which helps us explore the ways our childhood experiences with our parents or caregivers can influence the people we are attracted to and how we respond within intimate relationships. We may be drawn to both the positive and challenging qualities we experienced growing up.
Learning these relationship tools took me in a new direction. Instead of blaming Michael for my triggers or simply walking away from the conflict, I began taking responsibility for my own reactions. I started working on healing my childhood wounds within the relationship.
Had I left the relationship simply because I was uncomfortable, I may have carried those same unresolved lessons into another relationship.
The experience taught me something much bigger:
I could trust my spirit to be the director of my life movie. After all, my spirit has a direct line to the Divine.
Why Is This In My Movie?
When you are faced with a challenge in your life, especially within a relationship, a powerful question to ask your spirit is: “Why is this in my movie?”
Instead of immediately asking, “How do I get out of this?” or “Why is this happening to me?”, you can become curious about what the experience might be here to teach you.
Your spiritual director can reveal a deeper reason for the challenge, allowing you to learn from it and giving your soul an opportunity to grow and evolve.
Remember, your mind is the scriptwriter. It has a great deal to resolve from the subconscious. The conscious mind may have something to prove, and when it does, it can create quite a bit of drama.
Your heart is operating behind the scenes as the producer. Through feelings and emotions, it moves your body to take action in your next starring role.
And your spirit is the director—quietly guiding the entire production.
Your life can seem like a series of movies, or journeys, taking you through challenges and adventures, dramas and love stories, and sometimes even comedies.
There will be scenes you don't understand while you're living them. There will be moments when you wonder why you were given a particular role, why a certain person entered your story, or why a scene had to unfold the way it did.
But when you learn to listen to your spirit, you begin to see your life differently.
Understanding that there may be meaning within every scene of your life can elevate your spiritual intelligence. With time and perspective, you may look back and realize that what once felt like a problem was actually an invitation to grow.
You may discover that it wasn't happening to you. It was happening for you and through you.
And perhaps that is one of the greatest transformations of all: learning to trust the director within you.
