Happy September!

School buses once again line the streets, sidewalks are filled with the chatter of kids, backpacks are packed, new schedules are set, and the familiar rhythms of a new school year – and work – begin anew. September has eased in, bringing with it a fresh start to the fall season.

As children head back to school, this is also a wonderful moment to return to your own routines and goals.

I hope you enjoyed a summer filled with laid-back days, family, and friends. Those long, sun-soaked days offered the perfect opportunity to rest and recharge — just in time for an exciting new season ahead.

Below, you’ll get a glimpse of just a few of the great activities and community events that took place last month.

Our team at CHA is ready to roll on some exciting new initiatives which we’ll share along the way.

Blessings!

Coalition for a Resilient & Inclusive Waterfront

In August, youth from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Boston, YMCA of Greater Boston, and Youth Guidance joined the Coalition for a Resilient and Inclusive Waterfront (CRIW) for a day of fun and adventure on Boston Harbor.

CRIW brought in the CHA team to plan and organize the event and bring youth from CRIW partner organizations to the waterfront, where participants kayaked, sailed, and paddle boarded before enjoying lunch together in Piers Park. The day offered not just recreation, but an opportunity for young people to connect with the water, build confidence, and learn about our vibrant, resilient waterfront.

Quote from a scholar from Youth Guidance:

“We had lots of fun. It was a good experience to paddle and ride a boat in the middle of the city. I didn't think this was possible around here. It was also good to see opportunities like jobs we can do around the city that seem fun like being a sail instructor."

CHA Appearances

For The Culture Week

We’re thrilled that Mayor Michelle Wu declared August 30-25 as “For The Culture Week.” In addition to a pep rally at City Hall, the week included a multi-day experience that debuted a series of exciting events, panel discussions on wealth-building, and several block parties that brought Boston residents and families together.

The City officially declared August 30th as “New Edition Day” to honor the six legendary members of Boston’s very own New Edition. The day started with a street naming ceremony for the New Edition followed by a community block party in Roxbury. The City also welcomed the first ever Essence HBCU Classic while simultaneously celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Gospel Fest, the largest annual Gospel music event in New England.

Martha's Vineyard Film Festival

On Saturday, August 9th, Conan attended the premiere of "She Dared to Dream: Ayanna Pressley" at the historic Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival. The film is a short documentary that captures Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley's unwavering fight for justice as she consistently challenges systemic inequity with grit, purpose, clarity and compassion.
