American Academy of Pediatrics - California Chapter 2 | | | | I recently returned from a program directors’ conference where the accrediting body (ACGME) shared that all DEI requirements had to be eliminated — even removing recognition of programs that had previously received awards for this important work. | | |
This was not a voluntary decision; it was made in response to political pressures and the threat of jeopardizing funding to residency programs. In a world where we know representation matters and culturally concordant care improves outcomes, this step backward in medical education is deeply troubling and disheartening.
As a residency program director, I am reminded daily why this work matters. It is a privilege to witness trainees grow into confident, skilled physicians — navigating both high points and challenges along the way. Being part of their journey reinforces the importance of finding our “why” in the midst of busy schedules and constant demands. That sense of purpose not only sustains momentum but also helps protect us from burnout. As does our involvement in the AAP. Thank you for being here.
This month's newsletter brings exciting highlights! Check out the new pediatric hair study offering fresh insight into child health, and don’t miss our EDI Corner with practical tips to make equity and inclusion part of everyday care. We’re also featuring an eye-opening wildfire article that connects directly to the upcoming Pediatric Health in a Burning Planet conference. The Sanofi-hosted in-person diabetes lectures start next month — be sure to register!
And with the AAP National Conference (NCE) right around the corner, we can’t wait to see you. Please join us at the District Networking Event just before the President’s Welcome Reception to meet leadership from all four California Chapters and District. Stop by our table and say hello!
I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to our new chapter members! We invite you to get involved — whether by joining one of our chapter committees or reaching out to Tomas or me to explore where your passion and voice can make the greatest impact within Chapter 2. You can learn more about our committees and access other resources by visiting our website. And as always, we encourage you to share your thoughts, questions, or ideas through our Member Input Form, which helps guide discussion at future board meetings.
Your support and engagement are what make the work of this chapter possible—thank you for being part of it.

Fact Checked: The Measles Vaccine is Safe and Effective - AAP National
| | |
Wellness influencers and anti-vaccine advocates falsely assert that receiving the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is as dangerous as contracting measles itself.
Extensive research demonstrates that the MMR vaccine is safe and significantly reduces the risk of contracting measles, a disease that can lead to severe complications and death. Learn More Here!

Protecting Children's Health in an Era of Growing Firestorms

Over the past decade, California has endured some of the most devastating wildfire seasons in its recorded history. The destruction is measured not only in acres burned and homes destroyed, but also in the invisible toll of smoke inhalation, displacement, and toxic exposure — effects of which weigh heavily on children. EDI Corner - Dismantling Biases Within Pediatrics
By Jeanne Delgado, MD, FAAP
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Champion
School is officially back in session for our patients. For pediatricians, this may mean increased clinic visits to complete school forms or increased urgent and emergency care visits for illnesses as children start to gather again.
No matter what the healthcare environment, it’s important to make sure the space where children and guardians receive care feel open, safe, and trustworthy. Today’s newsletter will examine the biases within healthcare systems that can lead to worse outcomes for communities and how to ensure your work environment and practices are without any biases. Filling Your Cup
“An Attitude of Gratitude “
By Nirupama Madduri, M.D
In a world where we are confronted by long work days, clinic notes, inbox messages following us, and never-ending family obligations, it may be difficult to see a glimmer of light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Like every aspect of mindfulness, having a practice of gratitude is essential. Gratitude is essentially a practice of finding the positive aspects of our lives. Read More.

Free services for pediatric practices. Enroll and refer patients at no cost to you - at no cost to them!
Imagine a hypothetical scenario. A stressed mom brings in her daughter to see you for new severe anxiety since the birth of a new baby sister weeks ago. The patient briefly stopped eating due to fear that she might vomit and make the baby sick. She has intense tantrums and has been resistant to going to school. She has started writing letters expressing guilt and feeling lost and asking for help. Her weight is stable, and she is without self harm or suicidality. She has started weekly therapy, but her anxiety seems to be getting worse. You are considering starting an SSRI but are wondering if it might be too soon.
| | |
You have a few minutes in between patients, should you:
- Avoid calling Cal-MAP because you have not had a chance to use an evidence-based rating scale for this patient’s anxiety.
- Avoid calling Cal-MAP because you don’t have enough time to consult with the Cal-MAP psychiatrist.
- Avoid calling Cal-MAP because you have not had a chance to register with Cal-MAP yet.
- CALL Cal-MAP for a consultation.
| | |
The scenario above is a great example of when to reach out and utilize Cal-MAP!
We've provided a Q&A linked through the button below, which we hope will convince you to use Cal-MAP for a free, prompt, provider to provider consultation for your patients with mental health concerns. Here is the Cal-MAP phone number so you can write it down and keep it handy: 800-253-2103. You can also sign up for the consultation service and educational resources at Cal-MAP.org. Or, for more educational resources and webinars from Cal-MAP, head over to the program's trainings schedule page.
