Letter From Kathleen: Buildings & Grounds - More Than Bricks & Mortar

When people think about cathedral ministry, they often picture worship services, music, outreach programs, and pastoral care. What they may not realize is that behind all of that is a small army of systems, buildings, technologies, and people working together to keep our campus running.

I'm Kathleen Sheehan Burgess, Director of Administrative Operations at St. Paul's Cathedral. While you may not see me every Sunday, my role involves overseeing many of the behind-the-scenes functions that support our mission, including Accounting, Security, Information Technology, Human Resources, Insurance, Hospitality, and Buildings & Grounds. In short, if it's not liturgical, it probably lands on my desk at some point!.... Continue Reading (Click Here)

Pledge Mailer UPDATE: "Postage Due" & Why you may not have Received it yet.

If you still have not yet received your packet, and you have pledged last year, it is likely being sent out again. You can also pick one up in the porches of the cathedral.

A reminder that making a pledge is not exclusively tied to the mailer, you can make a pledge online today by visiting: https://stpaulcathedral.org/my-pledge/

Evensong

5 pm, In the Cathedral

Evensong tonight begins and ends with the music of Christopher Tye, a giant of English Tudor music. Tye wrote Latin motets and masses of great complexity, while at the same time producing music for the emerging English rite characterized by a sharply divergent simplicity. His anthem Give almes of thy goods sets a short text from the apocryphal book of Tobit – a text extracted from a long list of instructions by the righteous patriarch Tobit to his son – that serves to magnify Jesus’ insistence on the rightful use of our resources. The Anthem after the Third Collect is Tye’s O come, ye servants of the Lord, which is drawn from his collection called The Acts of the Apostles, largely homophonic (or hymn-like) settings of various passages from the Bible. Sandwiched in between Tye is some quintessentially Anglican cathedral music by Herbert Sumsion, for many decades the Organist-Choirmaster of Gloucester Cathedral. Wrapping it all up is some winsome and lyrical music by the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, one of the great classicists of the Romantic period, and of Ned Rorem, one of America’s most prominent composers of art song and of church music over the past century.

Election Eve Prayer Service

Monday, November 2, 6 pm, Virtual Meeting

On the eve of Election Day, Bishop Susan Brown Snook and leaders from across the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego invite you to gather online for a service of prayer on Monday, November 2.

In a season when public life can feel anxious, divided, and uncertain, the Church is called to something deeper than partisanship: to remember who we are in Christ. Together, we will pray for our country, for those who lead and serve, for the poor and vulnerable, for peace among nations, for the human family, and for wisdom in the days ahead.

This service is an invitation to place our hopes, fears, and responsibilities before God and to renew our commitment to seek and serve Christ in one another. Whatever the days ahead may bring, we gather as one body, trusting that our deepest allegiance is to the way of Jesus and that our common life is shaped by prayer, mercy, justice, and love. Join us online at for this diocesan Election Eve Prayer Service (Click Here).

A Message From Bishop Susan Brown Snook And The Rev. Canon Jeff Martinhauk

A message from Bishop Susan just went out regarding the medical retirement of The Rev. Cn. Jeff Martinhauk. For those of you who have been a member of St. Paul's Cathedral for several years you may remember him in his role as associate priest of the cathedral, prior to working for the EDSD. Our thoughts and prayer go out to you, Jeff, in this time of transition. View entire message (Click Here).

Email Scammer Alert

Sadly, there have been recent attempts by scammers, posing as The Rev. Cn. Allisyn Thomas and The Rev. Cn. Richard Hogue, to steal from parishioners via email. This is not the first time that scammers have posed as cathedral clergy or staff and will likely not be the last. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Emails from Allisyn, clergy and staff will come from an official cathedral email address. The naming convention for which is (last name)(letter of first name) “@stpaulcathedral.org”.
  • Monetary requests generally come from the annual pledge campaign, fundraisers or during special services. If it is outside of these typical circumstances, then be wary and seek further information.
  • In the above monetary request examples, we will typically direct you to the secure giving platform located on our Give page of the website. We won’t ask you to send it directly to clergy or staff.
  • We will never ask you for gift cards.

If you ever have questions, please reach out directly to a staff member. You can find individual contact information on the Staff Page. Or you can direct questions to info@stpaulcathedral.org.

Chapter Nominations Are Now Open!

The Nominating Committee is now accepting nominations for election to Chapter, the Cathedral’s governing body, or board of directors. We will elect four members to serve three-year terms at the Annual Meeting in January 2027. Both self-nominations and third-party nominations will be accepted. You can contact the chair of the committee, Allen Mutchler (almutc9284@outlook.com), or the dean’s warden, Mark Lester (mlestersd@sbcglobal.net) if you would like more information about Chapter service or would like nomination forms.

Trick-or-Treat Volunteers

We need help passing out candy during Coffee Hour on October 25th! Kids are invited to wear Halloween costumes to church that day. After service, kids can join us for trick or treating in the Great Hall. Kids of all ages (including babies!) will go from table to table collecting festive goodies during coffee hour.

Volunteer to stand at a table and pass out goodies during coffee hour as kids "trick or treat" at tables in the Great Hall. Family Ministry will provide everything you need, so you can just show up, pass out goodies, and help create a festive atmosphere! You're welcome to bring additional treats and/or decorations for the table, but that's not required!

Please contact Taylor Milam-Samuel, Family Minister, if you're interested in helping: milamsamuelt@stpaulcathedral.org

Sacred Ground in Action Initiative:

Latino Heritage Month (9/15 to 10/15)

With a bit of creativity and persistence, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino opened last year as "a permanent home to honor the stories, contributions, and impact of Latinos [/as/x] in the United States.”

Did you know that sixty-seven percent of Latinos in the United States were born in the US? Over the centuries, many contributions have been made in the country and particularly in Southern California. Furthermore, the Latino culture is rich in the arts, history, and politics. Learn more at Latino.si.edu (Click Here)

In the Latino/a/x culture, butterflies symbolize the returning souls of ancestors, spiritual transformation, and the resilience of migrants.

All Saints Ofrenda

This year, Día de los Muertos takes place on Sunday, November 1 and Monday, November 2, with major community festivals, altar displays, and processions across San Diego and Southern California running from October 15 through November 2.

November 1 is All Saints Sunday in our Anglican tradition and each year at this time we build a temporary altar or ofrenda (trans. "offering") where we display pictures of deceased loved ones, along with samples of their favorite foods and beverages, and seasonal decorations. Our ofrenda will be in place Sunday, October 25 and you can bring pictures and offerings to honor a loved one who has died, and deceased companion animals are included.

At our morning services on November 1, we will read aloud a list of those known to the congregation who have died since last year’s All Saints Sunday, November 2, 2025. If you have a name to add to this necrology, please send it via email before October 30 to the Rev. Canon Brooks Mason at masonb@stpaulcathedral.org.

The ofrenda and offerings will be disassembled and removed November 3 and after that time personal offerings may be picked up at the cathedral office reception desk between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm on weekdays.

Calling on Good Neighbors

In response to the impact of the current economy and our baptismal call to be good neighbors, St Paul’s will collect non-perishable food items on the first and third Sunday of the months.

Labeled containers can be found next to the Greeters Table in the Queen’s Courtyard. When donating please remember items must be unopened and not expired. We recommend canned fish or meat, nut butters, protein bars, canned beans/veggies/fruit/soup, whole grain crackers, etc. Items will be taken to a food bank at St. Mark's. Please check with Diane if you wish to contribute something that isn't listed above. (dianelopezhughes@me.com).
