Dear AAH Community,
As we approach August 22, I want to take a moment to remember Vicki Friedman, the founder of Arts As Healing, who passed away one year ago. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to know Vicki well, I have felt her presence throughout my first 60 days—in the stories people share, the relationships she built, and the community she created. The love people have for Vicki and for Arts As Healing is unmistakable.
This last week I witnessed the impact of that love after learning that Mary Louise, a longtime member of the AAH family, was going into hospice care. During open studio, participants created a card for Mary Louise and shared stories about her as an artist and a friend. The next day, I took the card to her home. Sadly, her health had declined and I was not able to meet her, but her son shared how important Arts As Healing has been to his mom.
I’ve been thinking about how Arts As Healing creates community, self-expression, and moments of joy during difficult times. I’m thankful to have made connections over the past two months—I’ve met volunteers, participants, board members, supporters, and friends of AAH. These connections have reminded me again and again of what happens when art brings people together and I’m looking forward to more opportunities to connect this fall.
Our free art classes will begin in September, and for the first time, we’ll be offering SATURDAY classes. As a previous participant, I know firsthand how a Saturday class would have been helpful due to my work schedule. I’m excited that we can now offer another option. Please join us and help spread the word so we can reach even more people who could benefit from our FREE ART CLASSES on Wednesdays and Saturdays!
Another important Saturday is Saturday, December 12 for our Gala. Our artist participants have been creating beautiful artwork that they generously donate to Arts As Healing. These pieces will be featured at our Gala, where guests will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to take home a piece of art.
This year’s Gala is a new format for Arts As Healing, and we’re planning a wonderful evening of cocktails, culinary delights, entertainment, art, raffles, and, most importantly, ways to support our community. Save the date for SATURDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 12, at The Ritz-Carlton and watch for your invitation to our Gala!
The Arts As Healing board is looking forward to meeting you at the Gala. Our board has had some recent changes. Karen Berger decided to step down as Board President after 13 years of leadership. Karen has been a steadfast supporter, leader, and friend to Arts As Healing, Vicki Friedman, and our community. I am incredibly grateful for all she has done to help position AAH for a strong future.
We welcome Jan Fitzgerald as our new Board President and Sara Levine as Board Vice President, as well as two new board members Dr. Raya Saba and Kirsten Jacobson. I look forward to working with them and our entire Board as we build on the strong foundation that has been created over the years.
There is so much ahead this fall, we are also planning an open house and to participate in several art fairs and festivals. Follow us on social media to stay connected to the art being created, the people creating it, and the healing that happens when we come together.
I welcome you to connect with me if you are interested in our classes, volunteering, or simply sharing with me how Arts As Healing has impacted you. I’d love to hear from you, AMiller@ArtsAsHealing.org or 314-518-8477.
With gratitude,
Amanda
