Dear Ascension friends and friends of Ascension,

Among the many ways we plan to mark the Church of the Ascension’s 200 years of ministry and community in New York City, one of the most important is remembering the Ascension faithful and friends who have gone before us. Some notable names appear on that list, reaching back to the days when Canal Street was our home, and we hope to highlight as many of them as we can over the coming year.

Closer to our hearts, though, are the parishioners we have lost more recently, and we want to remember them as part of our celebration, too. To that end, we are collecting remembrances of Ascension members and others buried from our parish over the past quarter century, which we will share in the weekly parish email throughout our bicentennial year.

We’ve created a simple form to make this easy. Visit ascensionnyc.org/remembrances, choose a name from the list, and write a few words (up to 200) about that person: a memory you have of them, a tribute, or some details of their life.

We hope to gather remembrances for as many names on the list as possible. Whether someone is honored with words of praise or with a quiet mention and a prayer, we want the people we loved and worshipped alongside to take their place among the names that have shaped our parish’s history.

Yours in faith,

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Open Church Ministry – Do you have some free time and want to meet interesting people from the neighborhood, congregation and world? If so, consider volunteering with the Open Door team. We have a need for people to spend as little as 1 shift (1 1/2 hours each) per month or more, during the hours of 12-3p.m. Monday- Friday to keep our church doors open. We welcome people to our space, answer questions about the Church and our activities, and are available as they walk around, sit, or pray. Sometimes you get to enjoy hearing a Voices of Ascension concert rehearsal or organ practice as an added bonus! Training with be provided. If interested in exploring further, please contact Madonna Stack Barker at (m.stack@rcn.com) or the Church office (212-254-8620 or info@ascensionnyc.org).

Immigration Legal Support Fund – Recently our diocese announced a new Immigration Legal Support Fund to support immigrant families in our congregations and neighborhoods throughout the Diocese of New York. The Legal Fund will help those navigating immigration under urgent and vulnerable circumstances to access legal resources. We're starting with a $50,000 contribution from the Bishop’s discretionary funds. Help us to match this amount to keep families together. With your support, we can do more so that no one faces the system alone. Your contribution makes possible same-day response, family preparedness, limited-scope appearances, and urgent filings. You can contribute here. To learn more about the Immigration Legal Support Fund Click here.

Your Pantry Needs You!

Ascension Outreach Inc. needs additional volunteer participation. The program is robust and developing in some great ways- and we need more hands-on help. Won’t you consider helping strengthen our service to our neighbors?
