Bald Eagle Update

Bald Eagle perched on branch

As you may have seen, the nesting pair of bald eagles in Boulder County near Stearns Lake have changed nesting locations this year. Residents may still continue to view the eagles by utilizing the publicly accessible designated viewing area along the Miller-Cradleboard system. Please note that Boulder County Parks and Open Space provided information that 104th is closed to pedestrian access, parking is not allowed at the end of 104th Street, and tickets will be issued. The Broomfield Eagle Watch program is discontinued for this year, but continue to watch our newsletter or visit Broomfield.org/VolunteerNow for future volunteer opportunities!

trail safety tip of the month and goat grazing information

Goat Grazing

The Open Space and Trails team utilizes a variety of methods for weed control, including one of our favorites, goat grazing! You may notice goats at the Markel Open Space located near the intersection of W. 136th Ave. and Aspen Street starting in May as they work to control the weed populations on site. These goats act as “weed warriors” as they chew on weedy plants, including their seed heads. Goats are especially effective at weed control because their vigorous chewing helps to destroy the seeds before they are able to spread.

Trail Safety Tip of the Month:

Spring has sprung! Keep the spring in your step by wearing snow shoes or traction devices on the trails when muddy, snowy, or icy conditions are present.

The Story of Wottge Open Space

Wottge family

Broomfield Library

3 Community Park Road, Broomfield, CO 80020

Apr. 4, Friday

1:30-3 p.m.

This presentation is hosted by Fred Martin, local historian, and co-sponsored by the Broomfield Historical Society. The former Wottge family farm, now the 62-acre Wottge Open Space in Broomfield, has a rich, centuries-old history that spans the globe. For over 200 years, the Wottges owned and operated a family farm in Germany. World War II drew the family patriarch into war and Stalin partitioned East Germany to Poland which divested the family of their treasured farm. This started the family’s emigration across the world to Broomfield. They arrived to Colorado as immigrant farm laborers in 1952 and have since built a lasting legacy in the Broomfield community. The slideshow presentation includes many historic photos, maps and documents that make this heroic story come alive.
