Prioritizing Self-Care

Greetings!
In numerous discussions and writings, I have emphasized the critical need for caregivers to prioritize their own well-being. Unfortunately, the reality is stark: caregivers frequently neglect self-care due to time constraints and a lack of awareness about the toll of their responsibilities.

I am revisiting the topic of caregiving because I'm genuinely concerned. Statistics alarmingly reveal that 50% of caregivers pass away before those they care for due to the immense stress of their duties. This sobering fact underscores the urgency of addressing caregivers' needs, whether they're supporting dementia patients or individuals with other illnesses requiring constant attention.

This list shows that you may have only 10 minutes to relax, or you may have more time. These are just some suggestions that many of my clients are using or have tried as they navigate their own caregiving journeys:

·      Exercise: at home or at the gym (whichever is convenient)
·      Take a walk: doesn’t have to be a long walk; just a quick chance to breathe in some clean outdoor air and notice the trees
·      Play with your pet (dog, cat, etc.)
·      Join a specialized group like a knitting club or a painting class
·      Join a study group {maybe at your place of worship or the local library)
·      Bake or cook
·      Play Solitaire on your computer or phone
·      Go to a therapist
·      Meet weekly with friends (Zoom is great for keeping in touch if you can’t get out of the house)
·      Coloring: coloring books are very soothing and let you concentrate on just what you are coloring
·      Eat a treat like a piece of cake or some wonderful cookies that you especially like
·      Drink a glass of your favorite beverage: flavored water, wine, martinis, juice
·      Meditate: use the app Calm or any meditate app to quiet your mind
·      Do nothing: just sit quietly for 5/10 minutes and think about NOTHING.
·      Daydream and Breath- Imagine that deep breaths will relax your mind and body. Try it.

The goal here is to make sure you have some time for yourself and that your stress level, and your blood pressure are not soaring. I know how difficult it is to find the time to do any one of these things, but I hope you will just consider the suggestions.

Thinking of you and available for your needs.
Kindly,
Ellie
