Message From the AAML President

By: Thomas Sasser, AAML President

Dear Fellows,

As we move into the heart of 2026 — and a month marked by Valentine’s Day, which is a reminder of both the promise and the complexity of family relationships — I am proud to highlight the extraordinary work being done across the Academy. Our work often intersects with families at moments when the promise of love and commitment falters, and it is during those moments that excellence in family law matters most.

One area of particular focus this month is the work of the Arbitration Committee, which continues to advance the Academy’s leadership in alternative dispute resolution. The Committee is doing exceptional work planning the upcoming AAML Arbitration Training, to be held May 7–8 in Chicago. This program is designed to provide Fellows with rigorous, practical training and to further elevate arbitration as a trusted and effective option for resolving family law disputes. It is expected to be a complete sellout, and if you were interested in attending, you should register without delay as registration will be offered to non-Fellows for any remaining seats in the coming weeks.

Just as importantly, the Arbitration and Legislation Committees are working together to play a central role in promoting the nationwide adoption of the Uniform Family Law Arbitration Act (UFLAA). The Academy has made clear that broader adoption of the UFLAA is a strategic priority. Uniform standards promote predictability, fairness and enforceability — benefiting families, practitioners and courts alike. Fellows interested in learning more about the UFLAA or participating in these efforts can find additional information through the Uniform Law Commission’s UFLAA community resources, available here. If you are interested in learning more or getting involved, please reach out to the office and they will connect you with the committee chairs.

Significant progress also continues on the Academy’s 2026 Strategic Actions, with focused and deliberate work by the Board of Directors to advance key initiatives. This progress is reflected in the ongoing efforts of the Bounds of Advocacy Task Force, as well as in recent Board action approving a plan to refresh the Academy’s visual identity and brand promise — an important step as we position the organization for the future and prepare to celebrate the Academy’s 65th anniversary.

Looking ahead, excitement continues to build for the 2026 Midyear Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, which will feature outstanding educational programming. The CLE Committee has done truly phenomenal work developing a lineup of programs that reflect the complexity of modern family law practice including a deep look into how different personality types interact — all while emphasizing the Academy’s commitment to staying at the forefront of our field. I want to specifically recognize Kelly Shindell-Delacey, whose leadership and vision have been instrumental in shaping this exceptional CLE content.

I also want to emphasize the importance of staying connected to our AAML Chapters. In January, members of the Board of Directors had the pleasure of visiting the Southern California Chapter for its annual Trial Advocacy Institute, as well as the Florida Chapter for its Annual Family Law Review Course. These visits reinforce the strength of the Academy at the chapter level and the depth of talent, mentorship and professionalism that exists throughout our organization.

Thank you to all who continue to give their time, energy and expertise to the Academy. Together, we are not only maintaining the highest standards of family law practice — we are actively shaping its future.

Warm regards,

Thomas J. Sasser

President, American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers

In this Tech Tip from the AAML Law Practice Management and Technology Committee, Jeff Alford sits down with David Morgan to explain how Fellows can leverage their existing iPads for taking and organizing notes, rather than purchasing a separate device.

Time Is Running Out: Secure Your Spot at the Midyear Meeting Today!

If the AAML Midyear Meeting isn’t on your calendar yet, this is your sign. The agenda is set, the community is gathering and the attorneys who get the most out of their AAML Fellowship will be in the room. Will you?

You’ll gain exceptional insights from this year's CLE program and experience the kind of networking that leads to referrals and lasting relationships with other Fellows. But what makes the Midyear Meeting different is what happens outside the sessions. This is your chance to step away from the nonstop pace of practice and enjoy time with your family.

Secure your spot before you’re the one asking, “How was it?” instead of saying, “I’m so glad I went.”

Last Day for Fellow-Exclusive Registration for Arbitration Training

The 2026 AAML Arbitration Training CLE program for this two-day event is now live on the AAML website. Attendees will experience in-depth sessions on family law arbitration, including drafting arbitration agreements, conducting arbitration hearings, preparing arbitration awards, best practices and more.

This in-person training is available to a limited number of participants. Fellows receive first access, and after Feb. 11, any remaining spots will be released to qualified Non-Fellows.

Words Matter: A Culturally Competent Look at Everyday Sayings

AAML's Racial, Ethnic and Religious Considerations in Family Law Committee (RERC) is starting off our program year with another installment in our new discussion series Let’s Talk About It. As a reminder, these discussion groups support the mission of the RERC Committee to foster education and inclusion among Academy Fellows. Let’s Talk About It is a welcoming space where people can come together for real, honest conversations about the issues that shape our interactions with clients, staff, colleagues, other professionals, court systems and others we encounter in our practice and daily life.

Join us tomorrow, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. CST for our February discussion on “Words Matter: A Culturally Competent look at Everyday Sayings.” Seemingly harmless phrases and “common sayings” often carry racial, ethnic, religious or other bias rooted in historical discrimination. Gain practical tools for recognizing problematic language so you can understand its impact on families and communities and learn how to be more inclusive and culturally competent in advocacy, mediation and courtroom settings.

How to Evaluate AI for Law Firm Marketing

AI marketing strategies that actually work (and drive revenue) are hard to find in a market full of noise. And the wrong tools can mean messy data, more work for staff and unnecessary risk. Join Tim Bedford, partner manager at Scorpion, on Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. CST, for a webinar built for Fellows who want a clearer, safer way to evaluate AI for marketing before investing.

You’ll learn four standards to quickly separate real value from empty claims: legal-specific intelligence, integrated systems, proven results and measurable impact. You’ll also leave with a practical four-step intake flow that helps your firm respond to new leads 24/7 and route clean, accurate information into your case management system, so opportunities don’t slip through the cracks.

Complimentary to all. This program is not eligible for CLE credit.
