Hurricanes Helene and Milton Recovery

The City, its residents and businesses experienced unprecedented damage from back-to-back hurricanes hitting within a two-week time span. Recovery is a long and ongoing process, and to keep everyone informed, a Hurricane Information page was created at ConnectTarponSprings. The site is continually updated with recovery assistance, debris pickup, public facility openings, permitting information and more.

FEMA and SBA Disaster Assistance Applications

Deadlines are approaching for residents affected by the hurricanes to apply for FEMA assistance. The deadline for Helene is Nov. 27, and Milton is Dec. 11. Applications can be done online: DisasterAssistance.gov; or by calling 800-621-3362. Business owners, homeowners, renters, and private nonprofit organizations can apply for disaster assistance through the SBA. To date there is no deadline for SBA applications; however new loan offers will be delayed due to a lapse in Congressional funding.

Beware of Unlicensed Contractors

Be careful and don't be scammed by unlicensed contractors. Make sure contractors you hire are licensed – unlicensed or fraudulent contractors often target desperate homeowners in the aftermath of hurricanes. Learn more at Pinellas County-Choosing a Contractor. You can verify if a contractor is licensed at Florida DBPR. Unlicensed contractors can be reported to the DBPR by calling 1-866-532-1440 or visit Florida DBPR.

Support Local - Shop the Sponge Docks

Many businesses suffered damage from Hurricane Helene, but few more than the Sponge Docks. For some it will take months to reopen, but many others have completed restoration. All 30+ businesses in the Sponge Exchange along with about 20 shops on Dodecanese and markets/restaurants on Athens are open. More are slowly opening as the tourist season begins. Now is a great time to visit the Docks and show local support for many of these businesses who have been in the City for decades.
