Domestic Violence shelter reopens in Catawba County

Last Friday, Oct. 16, the Catawba County United Way was honored to be part of the Grand Opening of the Shelter Home of the Foothills Domestic Violence Shelter – Catawba County Campus.

Along with many other local and regional nonprofits and public agencies, the United Way has worked with Shelter Home the last two years to bring this service back to the county.

This is a totally renovated 22-bed emergency shelter that provides a place of safety and support for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

“Twenty-eight miles is the distance a DV survivor in Catawba County has had to travel for the last two years to reach the nearest emergency bed for someone fleeing domestic violence,” Shelter Home Executive Director Lisa Clontz said during the opening ceremonies Friday.

“For many of us, twenty-eight miles may not seem like a lot, but when you have no car because you don’t have the keys, when you have no cash because someone else controlled every dollar, when you have three children, one in the school right up the road and your phone is ringing with threats, 28 miles feels like a hundred.”

According to United Way impact reports, the Shelter Home provided domestic violence/sexual assault services to 902 individuals in 2025. The Catawba County DV shelter officially opened its doors on Monday, Oct. 19 to serve survivors of domestic violence.

Guest speakers at the grand opening event included: Shelter Home Associate Dir. of Operations Donyetta Gilmer, Shelter Home Executive Dir. Lisa Clontz, Shelter Home Board Chair Kim Edmisten, Catawba County United Way Executive Dir. Mark Bumgarner, City of Conover Mayor Kyle Hayman and Project Contractor Cammie Dellinger.

United Way program helps homeless teens during holidays

Being a teen from a family struggling financially can feel hopeless.

This is where the Catawba County United Way (CCUW) steps in to help every December.

The Catawba County United Way's Teen Christmas program supports families with teens (ages 13–17) with $50 in gift cards during the annual, local Christmas Bureau.

In 2025, the CCUW program helped 600 teens. The United Way also partners with high school and middle school counselors/social workers to identify teens who may be homeless, pregnant, displaced or abandoned. Last year that number was nearly 50.

Who Quailifies?

Families qualify for the Christmas Bureau by showing financial need by being on government assistance or fall 150% below federal poverty guidelines. For proof of this, families have to provide an EBT (food stamp) award letter and/or all monthly income and expenses.

For those teens who have no parent to complete their Christmas Bureau applications, school personnel become their Christmas guardians completing the applications for them to connect them with the Teen Christmas program.

How your support helps.

Donations to Teen Christmas are used to purchase gift cards from local stores (T.J. Maxx and Old Navy - $25 each) to help teens purchase clothing, shoes and personal hygiene items. The gift cards are handed out during the Christmas Bureau distribution days in December.

UNITED WAY TEEN CHRISTMAS

As part of the Christmas Bureau, the Catawba County United Way Teen Christmas program supports families with teens (ages 13–17) during Christmas with $50 in gift cards. In 2025, the program helped 600 teens.

Impact in their own words.

- Vicki Toepper, a Catawba County Schools social worker shared this impact story about a student helped by Teen Christmas.

“United Way sponsored a young lady who was not allowed to remain at home and moved into a shelter. During this time, the student struggled to get simple hygiene items for herself. The shelter assisted her with basic items like clothing, shoes and of course shelter and food,” Toepper said.

“When she received her Christmas gift from the United Way, her face got so bright...she loved getting gift cards because she was able to shop for herself. The shopping experience was more of a gift than the things that she bought. I truly wish that the folks who had donated to the Teen Christmas program could have seen her face when she received her gift.”

Without the help from our donors in the community, this outreach would not be possible. The Catawba County United Way is thankful for all the help it receives each year.

Catawba County United Way wants to thank everyone who attended Race United at the Hickory Motor Speedway’s Championship night on Sept. 19.

Nearly 2,000 race fans came out to enjoy a fee night of racing, fireworks and an opportunity to meet more than a dozen local nonprofits who participated in this year’s Resource Fair.

The United Way also hosted a Food Drive prior to the start of racing and collected almost a ton of non-perishable items. The donations will be distributed between The Hickory Soup Kitchen, Ashure Ministry, The Salvation Army of Greater Hickory and The Corner Table.

The United Way also wants to say THANK YOU to our 2026 sponsors who helped to make it a free night of racing and fireworks for the public: Catawba Valley Medical Center, People’s Bank, Shuford Yarns, Rock House Farm Family of Brands, Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., Publix, Paramount Automotive and Truist Bank.

Thank You again to everyone who helped as a volunteer, set up for the Resource Fair, donated to the Food Drive, our event sponsors and all the spectators who came out to the races.

Catawba County Youth Council recruiting new members

Do you know of some high school student leaders with an interest in building their leadership skills and/or learning about local government and issues?

Catawba County NC Cooperative Extension is currently accepting applications for high school students in grades 9-11 who would like to be part of the Catawba County Youth Council. The council is a commissioner-appointed, youth leadership program designed to encourage civic engagement.

The council meets monthly on a Monday evening, with students having the chance to learn through programs, speakers, and volunteer projects. The Council is limited to students who live or attend school in Catawba County and there are some attendance expectations associated with re-appointments to continue, after the first year.

The council works closely with the Catawba County United Way and one of their favorite projects is their involvement with the United Way Youth grants program. Students can apply online at https://go.ncsu.edu/2026-27applicationccyc. Deadline to apply is Oct. 2 and also requires a letter of recommendation. If you have questions about the Youth Council, call Cooperative Extension at 828-465-8240.
