I was extremely impressed this week on a visit to
Argus Corp
. in North Toledo.
The dedicated employees who work for Argus customize Toledo-made
Jeep
Wranglers and Gladiators before they are sent all over the globe. It was a great experience and I was amazed how efficiently this company works. It was another example of how modernized our automotive-based industries have become. The really great news is that the company is growing and adding
jobs
to our economy. During the past eight weeks, Argus has added 140 jobs. The city's division of Economic Development does everything it can to promote economic growth, attract new businesses, and help existing companies like Argus thrive in Toledo.
Also this week, we
highlighted Toledo's commitment to inclusivity by
raising the Pride Flag
in honor of LGBTQ+
Pride Month. The flag will fly in front of One Government Center in place of the city flag through the end of June.
This gesture is just a small way we show our commitment to build a community where everyone feels included and valued.
Finally this week, I want to congratulate the Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor upon its 50th anniversary. I had the pleasure of presenting Harvey Savage Jr. with a proclamation. The kitchen was opened in 1969 by Harvey Savage Sr., who knew there was a tremendous need in the neighborhood. Thank you for your hard work and dedication toward a very important effort.

Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor
opened its doors on Vance St. in Toledo to feed some of the most vulnerable members of our community in 1969 by Harvey Savage Sr.. He recognized the tremendous need in the neighborhood. The
MLK Kitchen for the Poor
feeds more than 200 people daily, including children, the elderly, and people experiencing homelessness.
Hunger affects 42 million people in the United States, including more than 13 million children. Food insecurity not only has devastating effects on a community’s physical health, including links to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity, but it is also associated with mental, emotional, social and economic issues including: depression, anxiety, and difficulty focusing; a delay in childhood development; poor educational outcomes, impacting a community’s employment levels and lifetime earnings; and high healthcare costs.
The
MLK Kitchen for the Poor
serves anyone who walks through its doors with respect and dignity. Through its work, it is not only meeting a direct and urgent need, but also providing community, belonging, and a sense of hope to the community. The city recognizes
The MLK Kitchen for the Poor
upon its 50
th
anniversary.
