2023 Halifax Beautification Committee Earth Day Spring Fest
This past Earth Day, the Halifax Beautification Committee (HBC) hosted their Spring Fest! Many members from the community came together to share their environmental knowledge as well as provide activities. A few exciting opportunities were the pony rides on Terry Carman’s trusty steed, Incendio, a craft table with Miss Molly from Holmes Public Library, and the chickens and goats brought by Hidden Gem Homestead. Dennis Carman and Allan Palmer also graced the stage with their musical talents and performed some fun tunes to keep everyone entertained.
|
|
Maureen Twomey and her granddaughter taught how to plant marigolds in empty CD cases through their work with Green Hanson. Jeremy Gillespie of HBC also had a table of invasive plant species so people would know how to identify them. There were also a few displays to provide community members with visuals of how improperly disposed-of materials can quickly collect and cause problems. A few notable displays were the ones of cigarette litter, a line of straws so long it acted as a fence, and a tub full of single use plastic water bottles.

|
Halifax Troop 39 held a bottle & can drive, and they did an incredible job with it! The Boy Scouts also collected food donations for the food pantry, and both drives were very successful. Troop 39 will be hosting another bottle & can drive sometime around June/July, so be on the lookout for that.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this wonderful event. The HBC did such a good job raising awareness and reminding us that every day should be treated like Earth Day.

Historical Tidbit:
Observation Tower
For those who don’t know about this “tower,” it was added to the roof of the Town Hall in 1942 during the Second World War. As the name implies, it was built so that town residents could take turns watching for enemy planes.
There was a vote at the March 1942 Town Meeting to instruct the Town Clerk to extend to the citizens of the Town of Plympton a vote of appreciation for their help as observers at the tower.
I can recall my neighbor, Hilda Thomas, telling us of how she would take a lunch and binoculars and climb to the tower taking her turn watching for the enemy. We can only imagine how frightening this time must have been for the resident’s back then.
I can not recall any mention of a sighting, but I’m sure just the fact that there was a way to watch and be ready made the inhabitants feel safer.
The cost for this tower:
- E. W. Harlow & Sons, building tower $486.81
- Meserve Electric Co., installing wiring $39.80
- C. F Jordan, installing furnace pipe to tower $35.11
- Roland Minott, damage to glasses $12.00
- Bernice Wadsworth, advertising bids for tower $9.00
- Saunders Hardware & Paint Co., rope $8.05
- Total: $590.77
[Appropriation $650.00]

Climate Can-Do: Speaking Up
for Nature
There will always be a struggle to balance society and nature; but we, as the society, have a say in how our environment is treated. We can speak up. We know keeping our environment healthy affects our quality of life. One action we can take is let our local government know we care.
Local senators and representatives keep count of how many people contact them per issue. Because so many people spoke up about the algae blooms in Monponsett Pond (Halifax), it took a mere few years to clean it up. When we work together, we take important steps in caring for our earth. One active campaign right now is prevent radioactive waste from the decommissioned Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant from being dumped into Plymouth Bay. For more information, visit: www.saveourbayma.com.
Doing our part isn’t only about limiting our environmental footprint– it’s about community, and caring for every living thing within it. Advocating for our environment is one of the most crucial things that can be done. Contact local government officials and join in campaigns like Save Our Bay. Helping the planet is just a few steps away.
This Climate Can-Do Article was written by Sam Isom, BuzzAround Writing Intern, Bridgewater State University. We focus on actions which individuals can do in the face of our climate emergency. We can do!

Anticipation.
As we start to see buds on the tips of branches and leaves pushing out of the ground, just the slightest amount of anticipation for the coming spring is in the air. I am reminded in each step the possibilities of the beauty what will be, what can be.
This is the positive side of anticipation, the hope deliverer.
Then, of course, anticipation is also the fear deliverer.
It's up to us which lens we choose to look through.
"We are ever on the threshold of new journeys and new discoveries. Can you imagine the excitement of the Wright brothers on the morning of that first flight? The anticipation of Jonas Salk as he analyzed the data that demonstrated a way to prevent polio?" ~ Joseph B. Wirthlin
|
If we imagine a future of solutions, we are more likely to move forward toward them. That IS exciting to aniticipate.
