Legislative Report #06 - January 23, 2023

Dear John,

The main event (at least so far) is Waldstreicher and Lee's Senate Bill 1, which essentially mimics New York style legislation and prohibits the possession of firearms, as defined by reference to Criminal Law Articles §4-104 and §4-201, virtually everywhere in and within 100' of a place of public accommodation as defined in §20-301 of the State Government Article. Click here to download 2A Maryland's PDF of SB 1 which includes §4-104, §4-201 and §20-301 as attachments.

2A Maryland's mission is to provide law-abiding firearms owners with the necessary tools and information needed to enable them to take a active part in defending 2nd Amendment Rights. It is self-funded and all volunteer. We are doing our part, the rest is up to you.

New Additions to Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee (JPR)

Senator Paul Pinsky (D-22), recently appointed to the Senate (JPR) accepted an appointment as Director of Maryland Energy Administration. . The Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee selected Delegate Alonzo Washington (D 22) to fill the vacant seat in the Senate. Senate President Ferguson is on record that Pinsky's replacement would also be appointed to the JPR Committee. Washington's departure will create a vacancy in the House and on the Ways and Means Committee where Washington was Vice Chair.

Senator Susan Lee (D-16) resigned from her Senate seat to accept an appointment as Secretary of State. Delegate Arianna Kelly (D-16) has expressed an interest in the vacant Senate seat. Kelly is currently serving as Vice Chair on the House Health and Government Operations Committee (HGO). If appointed, Kelly is expected to fill the remaining vacancy on the 11 member Senate JPR Committee.
