The Brain Trust:

Virtual Mentorship Office Hours

Your journey, their experience — bridging the gap from aspiration to application.

ASBN is proud to launch The Brain Trust, a monthly virtual mentorship series exclusively for verified U.S.-based undergraduate and medical student members of ASBN who are interested in pursuing a career in neurosurgery.

Through this initiative, students can sign up for a 30-minute one-on-one Zoom session with a neurosurgeon from ASBN to ask questions, seek guidance, and gain insight into the path toward a neurosurgery career — from early interest to residency application and beyond.

Each month will feature a different ASBN neurosurgeon host, offering diverse backgrounds and experiences to provide a broad range of perspectives and advice. These 2-hour mentorship blocks are open to students who were not matched with a mentor in our formal NeuroMentoring Matters pod program, as well as new students looking to connect.

Stay tuned for our July mentor announcement and the sign-up link!

Spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Only verified U.S.-based ASBN student members are eligible.

Minds Matter: The Importance of Mental Health and Representation in Neurosurgery

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month — a powerful time to spotlight the importance of culturally responsive care and mental health representation in medicine.

At the American Society of Black Neurosurgeons (ASBN), we understand that brain health and mental health are deeply connected — especially for communities that have long been underserved and overlooked. The disparities in access, support, and representation are real, and they often begin with who’s in the room providing care.

ASBN is proud to build a future where more Black neurosurgeons lead the way — not only with clinical expertise but with the lived understanding of the emotional and social realities our communities face.

We invite you to be a part of this movement. Share a short quote, affirmation, or reflection that speaks to your personal journey of resilience or mental wellness. Your words may be featured in our campaign to uplift and inspire others navigating similar paths.

Let’s continue to break the stigma, center equity, and make space for healing — from the OR to our communities.

Dr. Alexis Canady and Dr. Clarence Sumner Greene, Sr. Honorarium Awards

Nominations open from June 16th to August 18th

We are honored to present the recipients of this prestigious award to two exemplary rising 4th-year medical students—one male and one female—who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in neurosurgical research.

Each awardee will receive a $1,500 prize, with the formal presentation of the award taking place during the ASBN Annual Dinner at the CNS Annual Meeting.

We encourage all eligible students to apply and honor the legacies of these groundbreaking neurosurgeons.

Annual Virtual Neurosurgery Intern/Resident Seminar Recap

Proud to share we recently hosted a powerful virtual session as part of our Annual Virtual Neurosurgery Resident & Intern Seminar. This seminar brought together 39 aspiring and practicing neurosurgeons from across the country for an afternoon of wisdom, mentorship, and inspiration.

This virtual gathering served as a reminder that success in neurosurgery is not only built on skill, but also on preparation and integrity.

Thank you to everyone who joined us — and a special thank you to Dr. Lindsey Ross, Dr. Kendrick Johnson, and Dr. Arnett Klugh for sharing your wisdom and heart with the next generation. We’re especially grateful to our future leaders and ASBN members whose presence made this event all the more meaningful!
