Here's The Latest From HES!

Executive Function Coaching

One of the biggest challenges students face today is managing the sheer volume of information they receive at school, both digitally and on paper. This requires an entirely new level of organization! The skills once needed to organize a binder or notebook have evolved into the ability to effectively manage a Google Drive and other digital resources. At Hilltop Educational Services (HES), we work with students to develop the organizational skills, time-management strategies, and task-initiation skills they need to successfully manage the demands of schoolwork, both in and out of the classroom.

Educational Advocacy

It is important to consider when you may need an educational advocate for your child. Here are a few examples to consider:

  • Your child is being evaluated for special education for the first time.
  • You aren't sure whether your child qualifies for an IEP or a 504 Plan.
  • You have concerns that your child's current supports aren't working.
  • You feel overwhelmed during IEP or 504 meetings.
  • You're struggling to understand testing results or educational reports.
  • Communication with the school has become difficult.
  • You're preparing for a major transition, such as changing schools or moving from high school to college.

HES has staff with extensive experience in the development and implementation of 504 Plans and IEPs, providing parents and students with knowledgeable support throughout the process.

PSAT/SAT Prep

A big announcement came from the College Board just recently. It is the introduction of a new Science score on the SAT, which is expected to be reported beginning in the spring. While there will be no separate Science section, students will receive a Science score ranging from 65 to 95, derived from science-related questions in both the Reading and Writing and Math sections. It is important to note that this score will be reported to students and high schools, but not to colleges. As we look ahead to the 2027 testing cycle, keep in mind that Hilltop Educational Services (HES) offers two PSAT/SAT preparation packages designed to meet the individual needs of students: an Intensive Program, lasting 5–6 weeks, and a Traditional Program, lasting 10–12 weeks.

College Counseling

12th Graders: Two important college admissions deadlines have passed, and another popular deadline (November 15) is just around the corner. One of the many benefits of applying Early Decision or Early Action is the opportunity to receive an admissions decision before the New Year or shortly thereafter. Regular Decision deadlines begin as early as January 1, with many colleges accepting applications through late January and into early February. Be sure to review each school's specific deadlines and requirements!

11th Graders: Now is the time to cast a wide net when exploring colleges and begin planning campus visits! Many schools, particularly in the Northeast, host open houses during the final weeks of fall. These visits provide valuable opportunities to explore campuses, learn about academic programs, and get a feel for each school's culture and environment.

At Hilltop Educational Services (HES), students receive personalized guidance on course selection, standardized testing, every stage of the college application process, and the financial considerations associated with college—including federal financial aid, scholarship opportunities, and loan planning.

College Essay Specialist Ms. Katherine Schoppel (left) is now enrolling 11th-grade students in her college essay workshop! As college admissions become increasingly competitive, the college essay continues to play an important role in helping students stand out in the application process. Ms. Schoppel draws on 25 plus years of experience teaching English at Barrington High School in Barrington, RI, along with her more recent work as founder of Authentic Applicant, to help students develop compelling, authentic essays that showcase their unique strengths and experiences.

Late Fall Reminders

-The Quarter 1 marking period at many high schools will be closing soon. Caretakers and students should be checking to see if any school work remains outstanding before it is too late!

-The next administration of the SAT after this upcoming Saturday, will be December 5th. The registration deadline for the December 5th SAT is November 20th. Registration must be completed through the College Board website.

-The FAFSA and CSS Profile have been available since October 1st. Parents of seniors should determine which colleges require only the FAFSA (typically public schools) and which require both the FAFSA and CSS Profile (typically private schools).
