This week Y's Man Clarence Hayes talked to new member Art Levy.
Art Levy holds the unique distinction of being the Y’s Men’s only Kentucky Colonel—the highest honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Art grew up in a two-bedroom apartment shared with his parents and three siblings in a five-story walk-up. Despite working after school from age 15, his childhood was filled with friends and a vibrant neighborhood. He aspired to become a lawyer in high school but studied accounting at Lehman College as a backup.
Fortunately, law worked out. Art earned his J.D. from the University at Buffalo Law School, marrying his high school sweetheart during his first year. She joined him in Buffalo, working as a teacher while earning an M.A. in Education.
Art began as in-house counsel for a large insurer and later transitioned to corporate counsel roles at several Fortune 500 companies, enjoying the continuity and variety of the work. At The Singer Company, where he primarily supported defense electronics, Art also provided legal support to the nation’s largest Job Corps center in Kentucky. His work there earned him the Kentucky Colonel honor.
After raising three children and 26 years in Westport, Art downsized, moving to Fairfield. Now retired, he enjoys pickleball, golf, and engaging with the Y’s Men community. He has two grandchildren, with more likely on the way.
