Winter continues to keep us on our toes!
According to our friends at Environment Canada, rain is expected to slow by this evening, with temperatures not dropping below freezing until later tonight. Unfortunately, even once things cool down, it will take several hours for the snow to freeze, leaving only a very small window for any possible grooming. At best, this means limited grooming on the stadium and loop for Saturday — and only if conditions cooperate.
Right now, the snowpack is extremely saturated. That means it may look frozen on top but remain soft and mushy underneath (the worst kind of surprise). Grooming beyond "the loop" in these conditions would do more harm than good, so natural snow trails will not see any grooming until the rain stops and the base can freeze all the way through.
As much as we dislike making this request, but it would be best for everyone to stay off the trails for the weekend, especially if rain continues. Natural snow areas are currently very “punchy,” and refraining from skiing these trails will help protect the base for future skiing. We encourage you all to take advantage of the many other indoor and outdoor recreation options available throughout the city while conditions improve.
If temperatures do drop a little more than forecasted, our grooming team will do their best to get the loop open so some skiing is available. When in doubt, please check Nordic Pulse for the most up-to-date information on whether the loop is skiable — this will always be the best place to confirm current conditions.
If Grooming is done on the Loop, to help minimize snow damage, geomat will be placed from the parking lot to the loop, creating a clear walking route and helping keep feet off the snow. We ask that everyone use this walking option.
These are never fun decisions, but they are made to protect the trails and give us the best chance at good skiing once winter decides to cooperate again. Thanks for your patience — and for helping us keep the snow where it belongs.
