2026 SCOR Annual Meeting

The SCOR annual meeting was successfully held from 8 to 10 September in Helsinki, Finland thanks to the gracious hosting by the Finnish SCOR committee. The meeting resulted in two new working groups (find out more below!), plans to support broader access and participation in SCOR, and ideas for outreach to early-career scientists. Reports throughout the meeting also highlighted the impacts of SCOR's scientific and capacity building activities on advancing ocean science through international collaborations. Thank you to all of the national committee members, working group and project representatives, partners, and observers who participated in person and online across time zones. Reports and presentations prepared for the meeting are available on the meeting webpage.

The international meeting attendees also engaged in collaborative exchanges at the symposium and early-career poster session on Baltic and Polar Research in Finland, which highlighted research interests and societal concerns that are shared across the globe. Participants also enjoyed a reception hosted by the City of Helsinki, a tour of the Polaris icebreaker, and many collegial networking breaks and meals.

Welcome also to the new SCOR Executive Committee members, who began their first terms at the conclusion of the general meeting: Jerry Wiggert (USA) as SCOR Secretary, Babette Tchonang (USA) as the Early-Career Member, and Hilkka Ndjaula (Namibia) taking on the position of the newest Vice President.

Save the Date! The 2027 SCOR annual meeting will be held in Valparaíso, Chile from 26 to 28 October 2027, with a premeeting event on 25 October 2027.

New SCOR Working Groups

We are excited to announce the two new working groups selected during the SCOR annual meeting! SCOR working groups address scientific issues that are impeding the advancement of contemporary ocean science such as conceptual and methodological issues important to the oceanographic community at large. Their compositions are diverse in geography and career stage, and are scoped to address narrowly focused topics to be completed in 3-5 years.

WG 176 AtoZTraits: Advancing Tools in Zooplankton Trait-based Research

AtoZTraits will brings together a global network of zooplankton experts to consolidate efforts in expanding, applying, and promoting the Global Zooplankton Trait Database (GZTD). Trait-based approaches offer a promising framework for simplifying the complexity of ecosystems through a common currency of traits, thereby mechanistically linking species to ecosystem functioning.

WG 177 PERSIST: Persistence and Stability of oceanic dissolved organic matter:

an Integrative Synthesis of Theories

PERSIST will bring together observationalists, theorists, experimentalists and modelers to advance our capacity to address the challenge of persistence of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The persistence of DOC within the ocean for thousands of years make this crucial to understand both for natural variations in the carbon cycle and as a potential for harnessing within marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) techniques.

2027 SCOR Visiting Scholars: Applications Now Open

The SCOR Visiting Scholar program enlists the services of ocean scientists, from both developed countries and developing countries, to teach short courses and to provide more extended on-site training and mentorship at developing country institutions.

This program is open to any scientists who have time available to spend teaching and mentoring in a developing country for two weeks or more. The $2500 USD scholarships are not intended to conduct joint research, although future new collaborations are a desirable outcome of a visit.

Official Launch!

BioGeoSCAPES Science Plan

Ocean metabolism and nutrient cycles on a changing planet

The BioGeoSCAPES Community has reached an exciting milestone: the official program launch and endorsement by SCOR, and the publication of the Science Plan.

BioGeoSCAPES remains an open and welcoming community of interdisciplinary scientists, and encourages the community to share the Science Plan broadly with scientists and funding agencies that would like to engage in the program.

SOLAS 3.0 Science Plan Release and Call for Participation

We are delighted to announce the official launch of the SOLAS 3.0: 2026–2035 Science Plan and Organisation—a bold new framework charting the next decade of international research at the ocean–atmosphere interface. The plan is structured around three objectives: Discovery Science, Science Towards Solutions, and Scientific Community and Skill Development. Read more here

As part of the implementation of the SOLAS 3.0 Science Plan, SOLAS (Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study) invites proposals for Task Groups—a focused, time-limited mechanism to address specific scientific needs and deliver tangible outcomes. Task Groups may support focused activities such as scientific or community workshops, synthesis and roadmap development, best-practice activities, pilot activities, or other initiatives that address a clearly identified SOLAS 3.0 need.
