NATIONAL FOOD DAY

National Food Day focuses on healthy and nutritious food and takes place annually on October 24th.

One of the themes of the day aims to help people to “Eat Real.” This theme is defined as "cutting back on sugar drinks, overly salted packaged foods and fatty, factory-farmed meats in favor of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and sustainably raised protein." The observance involves some of the country’s most prominent food activists, too. Their vision includes food that can be healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced. At the same time, the goal is to produce food with care for the environment, farm animals, and the people who grow, harvest, and serve it in mind.

The movement seeks a balance between nutrition, affordability and the environment. They strive to meet these goals by consistently addressing policy. In 2012, there were 3,200 events taking place from community festivals to a national conference in Washington, D.C. to thousands of school activities.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s!  Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!

There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):

APPETIZERS

  • Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75  (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
  • Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95  (German Ravioli in Broth)
  • Nürnbergerle 10.25 (3 small Bratwust with Sauerkraut and Pretzel)
  • Riesenbrezel 10.00  (Giant Pretzel with mustard)
  • Vesper Teller 14.50  (Assorted meats & cheeses served with pickle, radish, onion, mustard and pretzel)
  • Weisswurst 10.25  (White Sausage served with pretzel and sweet mustard)
  • Wurstsalat 9.25  (Chopped German Salami, Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Pickles and Onion tossed in Vinaigrette)
  • It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!

ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)

  • 10/23/24 & 10/24/24 — Schwäbischer Hochzeitsbraten mit Pilzen, Kräutern, Kartoffelpüree mit Geröstetem Knoblauch
  • und Meerrettich und Rotweinsoße und Brezel 19.50  (Stuffed Veal Shoulder with Wild Mushrooms, Onions and Fresh Herbs with Roasted Garlic and Horseradish Mashed Potatoes and Red Wine Sauce and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte  7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
  • 10/30/24 & 10/31/24 — Schweinshaxe, Bayerischkraut und Brezel 21.50  (Pork Hind Shank/Ham Hock, Smothered Cabbage and Pretzel);  Apfel Strudel mit Vanille Eis 7.25  (Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream)

11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel  19.50  (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel);  Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)

The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany.  He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today.  The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.

“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer.  “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant.  Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie.  It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”

  • During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last).  Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize!  Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
  • The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
  • Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
  • Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
  • Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

NEW ORLEANS – The Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy today announces the launch of a new rideshare pilot program for Frenchmen Street. The program is aimed at reducing vehicular traffic and improving safety. As one of the major strips in New Orleans for live music and entertainment, Frenchmen Street is often clogged with bumper-to-bumper traffic on this short two-block strip. For this pilot program, the Office of Nighttime Economy has partnered with Uber and Lyft to create rideshare drop-off and pick-up zones around the area to alleviate traffic. Uber and Lyft alone, account for roughly 80 percent of peak weekend traffic, according to their data.

Like other cities, New Orleans is moving toward implementing permanent designated rideshare zones in the future for a safer and more efficient solution to this ongoing problem, so that residents and visitors can enjoy the Frenchmen Street attractions without the hassle. The rideshare pilot program will run from Sept. 26 through Nov. 24 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. During that time, only rideshare pick-up and drop-off traffic will be prohibited from entering Frenchmen Street. All other vehicles will maintain access to the street.

"We’re excited to roll out the Frenchmen Rides initiative for improved safety for both patrons and nightlife workers on Frenchmen Street," said Michael Ince, Interim Director, Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy.

"We look forward to continued collaboration with businesses and other stakeholders as we work to improve the overall experience of Frenchmen Street. I commend Rob Henig Bell, Community Projects Manager, Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy for spearheading this initiative."

The pick-up and drop-off zones are located one block away from attractions, on the river-bound side of Elysian Fields Avenue. Non-rideshare vehicular traffic and pedestrian activity will retain access to the street, allowing for safer, less congested movement along the Frenchmen Street strip.

Designated pick-up and drop-off locations are common internationally and across the country. New Orleans residents are likely to have encountered them at the airport, attending Saints games or during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Many cities across the country have employed geofencing solutions for busy nightlife strips, similar to Frenchmen Street.

"By putting safety at the forefront, Uber and the City of New Orleans are working together to provide dedicated space for Uber users near one of the city's busiest nightlife streets, while encouraging more shared mobility," said Javier Correoso, Uber Director of Public Affairs.

"Through the Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy and in deploying tactics from Uber's Nightlife Operating Manual, New Orleans is at the forefront of reimagining what the future of curbside access looks like to best suit the needs of consumers."

The two designated rideshare zones are located on Elysian Fields Avenue, one block off of the Frenchmen strip.

  • Zone 1 - 700 Elysian Fields Avenue (next to Washington Square Park)
  • Zone 2 - 500 Elysian Fields Avenue (next to Premium Parking lot)

All rides created in the Uber and Lyft app to or from Frenchmen Street, between Esplanade Avenue and Royal Street, will be directed to one of the two rideshare zones.

Signage in these zones will remain ‘as is’ for daytime hours. For designated nighttime hours, signage will be changed to ‘Passenger Zone: No Parking’ with enforcement and penalties levied for violators in accordance with standard violations, which includes ticketing and towing.

Zombie Paintball Returns to NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale

07:00 October 04, 2024

By: Charles Andre Blanchard

Celebrate the Spooky Season

Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).

Festivities

This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.

Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.

NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Pricing & Packages

General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.

For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.

Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.

For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.

Hours & Dates of Operation

The attraction will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days:

benign

/bɪˈnaɪn/

Definition: Gentle and kindly; not harmful or detrimental.

Origin: From the Latin word "benignus," meaning "kind" or "good."

Example: The doctor assured her that the tumor was benign and posed no threat to her health.

"Harmless" is the essence of what "benign" signifies. When something is described as benign, it implies that it is not only gentle but also free from danger or risk. For instance, a benign tumor, while it may need monitoring, does not invade surrounding tissues or spread to other parts of the body. In a broader context, the term can apply to actions or behaviors that are non-threatening or beneficial, such as a benign smile or a benign policy initiative. Thus, "benign" embodies a reassuring quality of safety and kindness in various contexts.benign

Jami Attenberg and Alison Fensterstock - A REASON TO SEE YOU AGAIN and HOW WOMEN MADE MUSIC

Please join us for a very special evening with writers Jami Attenberg and Alison Fensterstock presenting and signing each of their new books: A REASON TO SEE YOU AGAIN: A Novel and HOW WOMEN MADE MUSIC: A Revolutionary History from NPR Music.

A REASON TO SEE YOU AGAIN

From New York Times bestselling author Jami Attenberg comes a dazzling novel of family, following a troubled mother and her two daughters over forty years and through a swiftly changing American landscape as they seek lives they can fully claim as their own.

The women of the Cohen family are in crisis. After the death of their patriarch, Rudy, the glue that held them all together, everyone’s life soon takes a dramatic turn.

Shelly, the younger of the two Cohen sisters, runs off to the West Coast to immerse herself in the emerging (and lucrative) world of technology. Her sister, Nancy, gets married at the age of twenty-one to a traveling salesman with a shadowy lifestyle, while their mother, Frieda, hurls herself into a boozy, troubled existence in Miami, trying to forget the past even as it haunts her.

But each woman must learn in her own way that running from the past can’t save you—and they must make life-altering decisions about what they want their family to be and what they need for themselves to move forward.

Beginning in the 1970s and spanning forty years, A Reason to See You Again takes the reader on a kaleidoscopic journey through motherhood, the American workforce, the tech industry, the self-help movement, inherited trauma, the ever-evolving ways we communicate with one another, and the many unexpected forms that love can take.

HOW WOMEN MADE MUSIC

Drawn from NPR Music’s acclaimed, groundbreaking series Turning the Tables, the definitive book on the vital role of Women in Music—from Beyoncé to Odetta, Taylor Swift to Joan Baez, Joan Jett to Dolly Parton—featuring archival interviews, essays, photographs, and illustrations.

Turning the Tables, launched in 2017, has revolutionized recognition of female artists, whether it be in best album lists or in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

How Women Made Music: A Revolutionary History from NPR Music brings this impressive history and fascinating reshaping to the page and includes material draws from more than fifty years of NPR’s coverage of great musical heroes and intriguing creators. This book is a must-have for music fans, songwriters, feminist historians, and those interested in how artists think and work, including:

  • Joan Baez talking about nonviolence as a musical principle in 1971
  • Dolly Parton’s favorite song and the story behind it
  • Patti Smith describing art as her “jealous mistress” in 1974
  • Nina Simone, in 2001, explaining how she developed the edge in her voice as a tool against racism.
  • Taylor Swift talking about when she had no idea if her musical career might work
  • Odetta on how shifting from classical music to folk allowed her to express her fury over Jim Crow

This incomparable hardcover volume is a vital record of history destined to become a classic and a great gift for any music fan or creative thinker.

NATIONAL BOLOGNA DAY

Each year on October 24th, people across the nation make a sandwich to participate in National Bologna Day. This would be a good day to have a bologna sandwich for lunch.

Sometimes this specialty meat is spelled baloney since that's how many people pronounce it. However, the more common spelling is Bologna. That's because it originated in the city of Bologna, Italy. This type of sausage is similar to the Italian mortadella. The finely ground pork or beef sausage or a combination is smoked and cured. In Italy, bologna includes a variety of spices not found in American bologna. In fact, in the United States, regulations require American bologna to be finely ground and without visible lard pieces. It hardly resembles anything found in Italy. It can also be made from chicken, turkey, venison, or soy protein.

Many people enjoy bologna sandwiches with a variety of garnishes. Some of those include mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomato, and onion.

Bologna Bowl – When a slice of bologna is heated, the fat renders and the round slice takes the shape of a bowl which may be filled with cheese or other fillings.

Makers offer a wide variety of bologna to choose from, too!

  • German Bologna
  • Kosher or halal bologna
  • Lebanon bologna
  • Lauantaimakkara
  • Rag bologna
  • South African polony
  • Vegetarian

How the English Language Took Over the World: The Story Behind Globalization

The Rise of English: A Historical Context

The English language's journey to global prominence is a remarkable tale shaped by historical events, cultural exchanges, and technological advancements. Its roots can be traced back to the early medieval period when the Anglo-Saxons spoke Old English, a language influenced by Germanic tribes. However, it was the Norman Conquest of 1066 that significantly altered the linguistic landscape of England. The introduction of Norman French created a bilingual society where English and French coexisted, enriching the vocabulary and structure of English.

As England emerged as a powerful nation in the late medieval period, its language began to evolve into Middle English, characterized by an influx of Latin and French words. This evolution continued into Early Modern English during the Renaissance, a period marked by the revival of classical learning and the proliferation of literature. Thinkers and writers like William Shakespeare and Geoffrey Chaucer played pivotal roles in enriching the language, making it more expressive and versatile. This transformation laid the groundwork for English to become a significant language of trade, diplomacy, and culture.

The Age of Exploration and Colonialism

The expansion of the British Empire during the 16th to 19th centuries was a critical factor in the spread of the English language. As England established colonies around the globe, English became the language of administration, education, and commerce. From North America to India, the British Empire facilitated the introduction of English in diverse regions, often at the expense of indigenous languages.

The impact of colonialism extended beyond mere language imposition. English became a tool for governance and control, shaping social structures and cultural identities in colonized nations. In many cases, English was associated with modernity and progress, leading to its adoption among local elites as a symbol of status and advancement. This phenomenon contributed to the establishment of English as a lingua franca, a common language that bridged communication gaps between people of different native languages.

The Industrial Revolution and Technological Advancements

The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries further propelled the English language onto the world stage. England emerged as a leader in industry and innovation, and with it came a surge in international trade and communication. As businesses expanded their reach, English became the preferred language for commerce, science, and technology.

The development of the telegraph, telephone, and later the internet transformed global communication. These innovations made it easier for people around the world to connect, share ideas, and conduct business. English, as the language of many technological advancements, gained prominence in various fields, from science and engineering to finance and marketing. This trend was solidified in the 20th century, as the rise of the United States as a global superpower further entrenched English as the dominant language of international relations and diplomacy.

The Influence of Media and Culture

The role of media and popular culture in the proliferation of English cannot be overstated. The 20th century witnessed the emergence of Hollywood as the epicenter of the global film industry. American movies, music, and television shows reached audiences worldwide, promoting English as the language of entertainment. This cultural dominance not only popularized English phrases and slang but also led to the adoption of English language norms in various countries.

Moreover, the internet revolution of the late 20th century transformed how people access information and communicate. English became the primary language of the web, with a significant proportion of online content produced in English. Social media platforms and digital communication tools further accelerated the spread of English, as users worldwide adopted it for global interactions. As a result, English evolved into a language that transcended geographical boundaries, becoming the go-to medium for global discourse.

English as a Global Lingua Franca

Today, English stands as a global lingua franca, a bridge connecting speakers of diverse languages. It facilitates communication in international business, academia, and diplomacy. As globalization continues to shape our world, the importance of English in fostering collaboration and understanding among nations has never been more pronounced.

In the business realm, proficiency in English is often a prerequisite for employment in multinational companies. Many organizations conduct operations in English, necessitating that employees communicate effectively in this language. Similarly, academia has embraced English as the primary language for research and scholarly publications. This trend has led to the rise of English-medium education in non-English-speaking countries, further solidifying the language's status.

The Linguistic Impact of Globalization

While the spread of English has created opportunities for communication and collaboration, it has also raised concerns about linguistic diversity and cultural homogenization. As English continues to dominate, many indigenous languages face the threat of extinction. The diminishing use of these languages poses a risk to cultural heritage and identity.

However, the relationship between English and other languages is not purely one of dominance. The globalization of English has also led to the emergence of new varieties and dialects. English is now spoken with unique accents and influences in countries around the world, resulting in a rich tapestry of linguistic diversity. This phenomenon, often referred to as "World Englishes," highlights the adaptability of English and its ability to incorporate elements from local languages and cultures.

The Future of English in a Globalized World

Looking ahead, the future of the English language will likely continue to evolve in response to changing global dynamics. As new technologies emerge and communication methods evolve, English may adapt to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world. The rise of artificial intelligence and machine translation could further influence how people interact with the language, potentially leading to new forms of expression.

Moreover, the ongoing dialogue about linguistic diversity and preservation will shape the narrative surrounding English's role in globalization. Efforts to promote multilingualism and protect endangered languages will be essential in ensuring that the spread of English does not come at the cost of cultural diversity.

In conclusion, the story of how the English language took over the world is a complex interplay of historical, cultural, and technological factors. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a global lingua franca, English has become a powerful tool for communication and connection. As we navigate the challenges and opportunities of globalization, the future of English will undoubtedly continue to reflect the diverse tapestry of human experience.

1861

The first transcontinental telegraph line in the United States began operation. Only 17 months before, the Pony Express had been the fastest means of delivering a message on the frontier. With the telegraph now connecting the country from coast to coast, the iconic and short-lived era of the Pony Express came to an end.

1938

With the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the 40-hour workweek went into effect in the United States.

1926

Harry Houdini took the stage for his final performance. However, neither he nor his audience at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit know that Houdini was falling ill. He died a few days later on October 31st from a ruptured appendix.

1992

Winning the World Series in 6 games, the Toronto Blue Jays become the first team outside the United States to win the championship. They defeated the Atlanta Braves 4 games to 2.

October 24th Celebrated Birthdays

Belva Ann Bennett Lockwood - 1830

As an attorney, Lockwood lobbied for equal rights for women including suffrage, property, guardianship, and pay. In 1874, Lockwood drafted a bill that would allow her to be admitted to the Supreme Court bar. It took five years to pass both the House and Senate and on February 15, 1879, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed the bill into law. In March, Lockwood became the first woman admitted to the Supreme Court bar. The following year, she became the first woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court.

Marjorie Joyner - 1896

The cosmetologist was a woman of many firsts. She was the first African American to graduate from the A.B. Molar Beauty School. As a teacher for Madam C.J. Walker, she invented and patented the first permanent-wave machine. Seeing the need for students and educators to network, Joyner founded the Alpha Chi Pi Omega Sorority and Fraternity for beauty students and United Beauty School Owners and Teachers Association.

Melvin Purvis - 1903

Working for the Justice Department under J. Edgar Hoover, Purvis was charged with capturing the gangster and bank robber, John Dillinger. After several near misses, on July 22, 1934, Purvis and his agents received a tip that led them to Dillinger. Outside the Biograph Theater, a shootout between Dillinger and Purvis's agents resulted in the gangster's death.

Nathaniel Wyeth - 1911

The mechanical engineer's development of a type of polyethylene terephthalate made it possible to bottle carbonated beverages in plastic containers.

Bob Kane - 1915

The comic book writer created, along with Milton Finger, the DC Comics character Batman.

Marie Foster - 1917

The Civil Rights activist helped thousands of African-Americans to register to vote and overcome voter suppression.

Texaco’s First Seaplane

This rather odd looking contraption is an undated and unattributed photograph that was labeled “Texaco’s First Airplane.” More accurately, it was their first seaplane, a Keystone/Loening Model K-84 probably acquired in 1926. It was known as the “Commuter” and could accommodate four passengers.

Texaco used to offer a full line of collectible toy airplanes from their fleet for purchase at their gasoline stations under the banner “Wings of Texaco.”

Boxing at the Municipal Auditorium

Completed and opened on May 30, 1930, the Municipal Auditorium quickly became a popular venue for all sorts of events from Mardi Gras balls to boxing matches. The photograph below shows the configuration for a boxing match.

It was here on August 24, 1956, that Joe Brown defeated Wallace “Bud” Smith to win the lightweight title in a 15-round split decision. Perhaps the most famous fight was the April 29, 1963, bout between local middleweight Ralph Dupas when he won the world junior middleweight title from Denny Moyer.

Mechanic’s Institute

Rebuilt on the original site of the first building that was destroyed by fire in 1854, the new Mechanic's Institute was an imposing building for its day. Although it was brick, the façade was stuccoed and painted to resemble granite. This image is from a stereograph produced by Lilienthal and is dated as 1860 - 1870 by the Library of Congress. This would be the site of the murderous 1866 Riot.

The Project

This collaboration is aligned with our city’s efforts to uplift community voices and utilize our city’s culture to bring positive change to the community. We can bring opportunities for small businesses, local artists, and culture bearers. Most importantly, with community support, the project will create a self-funded long-term impact on our city, helping create positive change and local investment through the arts. The artwork will be both meaningful and representative of the diversity of our city, boosting social cohesion and strengthening community relationships.

The inaugural NOLA Mural Fest will launch in the fall of 2024 at Beanlandia October 25th-27th.

Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, has a fascinating wine culture that's shaped by its unique blend of French and Italian influences, rugged terrain, and Mediterranean climate. Despite being part of France, Italy’s influence on Corsica is profound, shaping the island’s culture, language, architecture, cuisine, and especially its wine traditions. Corsica was under Genoese rule for nearly five centuries (from the late 13th century until 1768), and its proximity to Tuscany and Sardinia also contributed to strong Italian connections.

Most of the Corsican grapes have ties to Italy as well. Nielluccio is Corsica’s most important red grape and is genetically very similar to Sangiovese, Italy’s iconic grape, particularly from Tuscany. Vermentino, known in Corsica as Malvoisie de Corse, is widely planted in both Corsica and Sardinia, as well as in regions of mainland Italy like Liguria and Tuscany. It is thought to have originated from Italy, possibly Liguria, and spread across the Mediterranean. Sciaccarello, another key red grape of Corsica, is believed to be related to Mammolo, a lesser-known grape from Tuscany. Mammolo is often used in blends, such as in Chianti, but in Corsica, Sciaccarello has developed a distinct identity.

Even after France acquired Corsica in 1768, Italian influence remained deeply embedded in the island’s identity. Many Corsicans still feel a closer cultural affinity to Italy than to mainland France, especially given the shared history, language, and food traditions. This dual identity makes Corsica unique within France, with its Italian roots constantly blending with French culture to create something distinct. It also contributes to the island’s distinctive wine style—one that’s both rustic and refined, combining the structure of Italian reds with the elegance of French whites.

Corsican wines are still relatively under the radar, which makes them an exciting discovery for wine drinkers looking for something new and unique. Dave Sobiesk will accompany us on this tour as Artisan Fine Wines has a great selection from the island for us to choose from. I hope you'll join us! Use this link for tickets,Corsica

Johnette Downing - Petit Pierre and His Wild Adventure

Join us for a special story time reading and signing with children's picture book author and musician Johnette Downing as we celebrate the release of her new book, Petit Pierre and His Wild Adventure.

Petit Pierre has made a home for himself on the coast where Louisiana meets Mississippi, and now it is time for him to learn how to plunge-dive. Brown pelicans typically pick up this behavior by watching others do it. Will a potential love interest help Pierre learn how to dive? Young readers will follow his progress and, along the way, find out more about Gulf of Mexico marine life.

“As any nature-lover knows, watching brown pelicans plunge dive is one of the Gulf Coast’s most majestic sights. Joining Pierre as he learns this skill, step-by-step, page-by-page, is inspirational, exciting, and, just like in nature, a joy to behold.” — Rien Fertel, author of Brown Pelican

Johnette Downing is a multi-award winning musician and author who serves up a gumbo of Louisiana roots music and books in a toe-tapping, two-stepping good time for children across the globe. In addition to working with children, she presents keynotes and workshops for educators globally. Dedicated to celebrating childhood, nurturing cultural exchanges, and fostering literacy through her music and books, Downing has performed in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, Central America, North America and the Caribbean. Her presentations speak to a child’s interests in an engaging, interactive, thought-provoking, educational, entertaining and culturally respectful way; earning her a reputation for being the “Musical Ambassador to Children” and the “Pied Piper of Louisiana Music Traditions.”

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street

by: OffBeat Staff

The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.

Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.

The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, October 28

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS - Minrose Gwin

Join us for an evening with author Minrose Gwin when she presents and signs her new novel, BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS.

From Minrose Gwin, award-winning author of The Accidentals, comes Beautiful Dreamers, a story of a precocious teen and her mother, their gay best friend, and the con man who unravels their family.

It’s 1953 when Memory Feather and her mother, Virginia, are welcomed back home to the Mississippi Gulf Coast community of Belle Cote by Virginia’s childhood friend Mac McFadden, whose verve and energy buoy the recently divorced Virginia to embrace this new chapter. Memory (“Mem”) is unlike other girls: she is attuned to the voices of plants and animals and is missing two fingers on her twisted left hand. The three of them knit their lives together and become a close, though unconventional, family.

While Mac’s wealth, brains, and good humor have allowed him to carve out a niche in Belle Cote, his position as a gay man active in the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement exposes him to censure, harassment, and even brutality. When the unscrupulous and charismatic Tony Amato arrives in Belle Cote as Mac’s “guest,” he sets in motion a series of events that will shatter familial bonds and forever change Mem’s life. Now, an adult Mem recounts the story of the scars Tony left in her teenage years, confronting her culpability in the disastrous events of that final summer.

Sweeping, dramatic, and vividly rendered, Beautiful Dreamers is a novel of innocence and betrayal, love and intolerance, and the care and honesty we owe the families we choose.

Minrose Gwin is the author of the novels The Queen of Palmyra, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick and finalist for the John Gardner Fiction Book Award; Promise, which was shortlisted for the Willie Morris Award in Southern Literature; and The Accidentals, which received the 2020 Mississippi Institute for Arts and Letters Award in Fiction. Her fourth novel, Beautiful Dreamers, has just been released by Hub City Press. She has also published a memoir, Wishing for Snow, about the collision of poetry and psychosis in her mother’s life, and four books of literary and cultural criticism, most recently Remembering Medgar Evers: Writing the Long Civil Rights Movement. She was coeditor of The Literature of the American South, a Norton anthology, and The Southern Literary Journal. She received the Society for the Study of Southern Literature Richard Beale Davis Award for Distinguished Lifetime Service to Southern Letters and the William Wisdom/William Faulkner Books-in-Process Award for Rescue, the novel she’s working on now.

Like the characters in her novel Promise, Minrose Gwin is a native of Tupelo, Mississippi. She began her writing career as a journalist and later taught at universities across the country, most recently the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was Kenan Eminent Professor of English. She now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her partner, Ruth Salvaggio, and several loquacious four-leggeds.

A Tribute to the Queen: Irma Thomas

November 27th | Tipitina's

Tipitina’s, in collaboration with producer Sonny Schneidau, is thrilled to announce A Tribute to the Queen – Irma Thomas, a special event honoring the legendary Soul Queen of New Orleans. This one-night-only tribute will showcase performances by Irma Thomas herself, alongside a star-studded lineup of female artists who will honor her legacy by performing her most beloved songs. Among the performers are Galactic, Ani DiFranco, Marcia Ball, Jelly Joseph, Erica Falls, Leyla McCalla, Joy Clark, Susan Cowsill, Gabrielle Cavassa, Sierra Green and Jolynda “Kiki” Chapman. Irma Thomas, joined by Galactic, will also preview songs from their forthcoming album Audience With The Queen, set for release in 2025.

A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

WE GOT NEXT.
