Mychal's News

September | 2025

We are humbled to share that we are just steps away from completing the Capital Campaign for Mychal's Café. What began as a dream has been made possible through the generosity, encouragement, and belief of so many of you. Each gift, each kind word, and each moment of support has carried us closer to securing this space for years to come. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has stood with us on this journey - thank you!

We’re also thrilled to announce another exciting part of this story: our very first art show will soon be hanging on our walls! Next Friday, September 12th, from 6-8pm, we will host an Opening Night featuring the bold and inspiring work of artist Clara Woods. Her colorful, heartfelt pieces are a perfect reflection of the creativity and joy that Mychal's Café was built to celebrate. We look forward to welcoming you for this special evening - you won't want to miss the opportunity to meet this amazing artist! Clara's artwork will remain on display at Mychal's Café until October 10th and will be available for purchase throughout the month.

And as you’re marking your calendars, please save the date for one of our favorite traditions: the 7th Annual Santa Stroll on Saturday, December 13th! Each year this event grows in magic, laughter, and community spirit. We would be honored to have you walk alongside us, celebrating the season and this beautiful community we continue to build together.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all of your support!

Gratefully,

Ed

This month, we are thrilled to shine our GEM Member spotlight on Michael Thomas, CEO of ConnectIDD, a “disability empowerment agency” that helps families, nonprofits, businesses, and cities build more inclusive communities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Michael and his team provide everything from strategic planning and program design to social enterprise development and technology integration, always with the goal of creating lasting systems that support and uplift the IDD community.

When asked why being a GEM Club member matters, Michael explained that their support is both personal and professional: "I think that people see monthly support programs as quick donations that don't actually do much for the organization. The ConnectIDD team sees our GEM membership as a way to commit ourselves to the work of Mychal's. We also hope that our monthly gift is one of many that will collectively elevate the Mychal's mission to support more people with disabilities in California and beyond."

We are deeply grateful to Michael and the entire ConnectIDD team for their generosity and leadership. Their dedication reflects the true spirit of the GEM Club, bringing together people who believe in Mychal’s mission and who are committed to helping every individual thrive.

Jason Mescheder has been a dedicated Mychal’s volunteer for over 10 years, and we are so grateful for his heart and energy. Born and raised in Torrance, California, he now lives in Lomita with his wife and two children, Kaleesi, 11, and Cody, 7. “My family means everything to me, and everything I do is for them,” he says.

While Jason enjoys many events, the Annual luncheon is his favorite. “The speeches always get me all teary-eyed,” he admits, though the festive Santa Stroll is a close second.

What keeps him coming back year after year is the people. From students to staff, Jason cherishes the connections he has made and the chance to be part of something meaningful. Over the past decade, he has witnessed firsthand the incredible impact Mychal’s has on families and continues to recommend it to friends and colleagues alike.

We are lucky to have Jason as part of the Mychal’s family, sharing his time, energy, and heart with all of us!

Mychal’s is looking for a volunteer to lead a dance class once a month for our After School Program (ASP). This program serves participants ages 14-22 with developmental disabilities, and focuses on social and recreational activities. Must lead with love, patience, and a desire to have fun while learning!

If you are interested and experienced, please email our ASP Supervisor, Ari, at arijhan@mychals.org.

We’re in the home stretch - help us cross the finish line!

Mychal’s Café has been serving coffee, great food, and life-changing job training for young adults with developmental disabilities for over a year.

Thanks to incredible supporters like you, we’ve already raised $2,559,381 million toward securing our forever home at 2302 Artesia Blvd. But here’s the big news: we have less than $56,000 left and we need to raise it in JUST 56 DAYS!!!

This will cover everything that has made Mychal’s Café what it is today including:

  • Purchasing the building
  • Essential renovations
  • Furnishings and kitchen equipment
  • And everything else that has created this welcoming, learning space!

Owning this building means more than stability - it means opportunity, independence, and a lasting legacy of inclusion for years to come. We are closer than ever - your support now will make the difference and help us achieve this dream!

Want to leave your mark? Name a menu item, sponsor a communal table, claim the patio, or even become an Employee of the Month sponsor. From $1,000 to $250,000, there's a naming opportunity for every level! See what's still available and help secure the future of Mychal’s Café and the staff that thrive there!

A local Angeleno, Caelyn first joined Mychal’s Learning Place at just 12 years old. Since then, she has grown from a participant in our After School Program into a dynamic, hardworking, and charismatic team member at the Café.

“Having a job feels out of this world. This place is my forever home, and Ed is like a dad to me,” Caelyn shares. From mastering the salad station to becoming a skilled barista who loves her iced coffee creations, Caelyn has proven herself a leader and role model at Mychal’s Café.
