MATCH Day a Success for Family Medicine;
Mississippi Gains 49 New FM Interns

A record 4,493 medical students and graduates matched to family medicine residency programs nationally in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Main Residency Match on Friday, March 19, marking 12 sequential years of growth.

In fact, family medicine positions accounted for 13.8% of all the positions offered around the country -- 4,844 out of a total of 38,106 positions. AAFP issued an analysis of the Match trends of the past few years.

Mississippi will have 49 new interns starting their new jobs as PGY-1s in July at six family medicine programs, including the following:

For two programs, Memorial Hospital in Gulfport and MSMERC Mississippi Delta in Greenville, it was their first time to participate in the NMRP Match. As the state's newest family medicine residency programs, they are not fully staffed yet. MSMERC first accepted interns July 1, 2020, and Memorial is hiring their very first residents to begin July 1, 2021.

The two medical schools in Mississippi had successful matches. University of Mississippi School of Medicine (UMMC) had a total of 135 matches, 9 of them in family medicine and 3 of those going to in-state programs. William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine had at least 21 family medicine matches with 6 of those going to in-state programs.

Nationally it was the largest Match in history with 38,106 total positions offered and a total of 5,915 programs participating. The number of medical students involved in 2021 was 48,700, an 8 percent increase over 2020.
