50th Annual Glass Art Society Conference, May 2022
In May the Glass Art Society international conference, celebrating its 50th anniversary, was held in Tacoma, Washington. It was such a joy to see old friends and to make new ones. Covid had cancelled the much anticipated Swedish conference in 2020 and the attempt at a virtual meeting in 2021 did not begin to capture the community and vibrancy of an in-person event. Unfortunately, many of our network of worldwide renowned artists were unable to attend due to travel restrictions. Next year in Detroit!
Kicking off on opening night was a spectacular performance by our own Einar & Jamex De La Torre at the Museum of Glass Hot Shop. I was deeply honored that they created a magnificent sculpture that they had practiced (and worked out the kinks) at my hot shop weeks before.
The performance by world class glass artists in memory of glass pioneer Benjamin Moore was heartbreaking and spectacular! Not a dry eye in the house.
The San Diego contingency had a strong showing. The demos, lecmos, panels, and lectures were top notch and the technical display introduced us to vendors and products that fueled our imaginations.
I have attended nearly every conference since the early 80s but this was the first time I applied and was accepted as a presenter. The theme "Between Here and There" suggested history, growth, and perseverance. But it immediately struck me as how I approached my own art and glass practice before and after my accident in my studio.
I conceived of this panel after re-meeting Josh Hershman following his 2017 accident. I too had had a near fatal accident in my studio in 2015. I had not previously met someone with the similar experience of having a catastrophic tragedy while doing something we love. The long journey back from trauma through re-traumatization and PTSD has been rocky and I wanted to discuss this in a public forum as a part of my healing. I had the good fortune of being introduced to the fabulous Terri Grant as another potential panelist and she was on board immediately. My friend, artist, author, and educator, Steve Ciezki, agreed to moderate and along with Josh we had a complete panel. My vision was to bring our community valuable information as to how to show up for a traumatized person as well as a sensitivity to retraumatizing triggers.
I encourage our members to attend next year. Every type of glass work is well represented and the multi cultural experience with like minded artists cannot be beat!

Coatings by Sandberg (CBS) Factory Tour
On Tuesday, July 12, twenty AGASC members drove and met up at Coatings by Sandberg (CBS), for a tour and sale. We started out in the lobby's museum of dichroic glass until everyone had arrived. Dana Baldwin, CBS Marketing Director, then started the tour and led us into the production area. Following the talk, we were able to shop for specially priced dichroic glass. Judging by the lines to check out, everyone loved their shopping experience. We had lunch close by and then most of us headed to Hollander Glass, where we went for Bullseye Glass and Oceanside Glass.

Fallbrook School of the Arts Glass Studio
Expansion and Ribbon Cutting
The NEW Glass studio at Fallbrook is about four times larger than the old studio. We now have a large workspace for classes with great natural light and four 4'x8' student work tables in the main studio for fused glass. There is a cold-working room, a stained glass studio and an outdoor patio with a triple stainless sink. We are in the process of procuring more equipment to expand the class offerings. We will be adding three vitra-graph kilns, a Crucible kiln and 2 small glory holes and an annealing kiln for hot glass for making paperweights and ornaments. The equipment and new offerings of classes will start in the Fall. This studio is perfect for visiting artists workshops or glass events. Funding for the new studio from Olivia and Harlan. Teachers include Patty Gray, Susan Hirsch, Krista Heron, Christine Head, Suzanne Balestri, Michelle White, Mariah Conner Armstrong and Michelle Sherer.
You’re invited to join the Fallbrook School of the Arts and The Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce for a Ribbon Cutting Celebration of our newly expanded Glass Studio!
Wednesday, August 24th
Tour the Studio at 10:00 AM
Ribbon Cutting at 10:30 AM
