Diamond in the Rough

Key Features

  • GemX (CVD Diamond) Coating: Delivers extreme hardness and wear resistance.
  • Enhanced Tool Life: GemX coating extends tool longevity under high-performance conditions.
  • Material Compatibility: Optimized for graphite, composites, and similar materials.
  • Precision Design: Available in multiple geometries and lengths for diverse milling needs.
  • Applications: Ideal for roughing and finishing operations requiring high accuracy and durability.

Our TuffCut® GX diamond coated family delivers unmatched hardness, wear resistance, and tool longevity. Engineered for precision and durability, the TuffCut® GX line features series 111GX, 140GX, 163GX, and 165GX. These 4 flute end mills range from standard length, extra-long, ball nose, to stub length. They provide versatile solutions for high-performance milling of graphite, composites, and similar materials.

Due to graphite and composite materials brittleness and highly abrasive nature machining these materials require a specialized approach. The GemX, CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition), diamond coating is essential to maintain maximum hardness and wear resistance a cutting tool needs to machine these materials. It delivers the highest level of durability and wear resistance among all our coatings, ensuring extended tool life and outstanding performance in the most demanding milling operations.

Industries with complex manufacturing needs such as aerospace, defense, automotive, and energy stand to benefit the most from these tools.

Reducing Tool Wear and Maximizing Productivity in Machining

At M.A. Ford, continuous improvement is at the core of every product developed. The goal is to ensure customers receive the highest quality cutting tools that deliver consistent performance and reliability. However, not every machining process is the same, and manufacturers often face unique challenges that can impact productivity, costs, and part quality.

One of the most common issues encountered in machining operations is tool wear. As tools degrade over time, their effectiveness diminishes, leading to scrap parts, reduced accuracy, and costly equipment downtime.

Understanding Tool Wear

Tool wear is an inevitable part of any machining process. Some wear patterns include:

  • Flank Wear: Gradual wear on the tool’s flank face, affecting surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
  • Crater Wear: Erosion on the rake face caused by high temperatures and friction during cutting.
  • Notch Wear: Localized wear near the depth-of-cut line, often resulting from hard inclusions or work-hardened material.

Over time, these wear patterns can cause parts to drift outside of strict dimensional tolerances, leading to unusable products and increased production costs.

Proactive Measures to Reduce Wear and Extend Tool Life

To mitigate wear, reduce downtime, and extend tool life, several proactive strategies can be implemented:

  • Optimize Speeds and Feeds: Adjust cutting parameters based on the hardness and characteristics of the material being machined. Proper optimization minimizes heat generation and mechanical stress on the tool.
  • Tool Coating: Matching the correct coating to your application drastically reduces friction, improves heat resistance, and extends tool life.
  • Enhance Cooling and Lubrication: Apply high-pressure coolant or lubrication directly to the cutting zone to reduce friction, control temperature, and flush away chips effectively.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

M.A. Ford remains dedicated to advancing cutting tool technology through research, innovation, and customer collaboration. Continuous improvement is not just a goal—it’s a commitment to delivering the best possible performance in every tool produced.
