From Principal Haste

Dear Purgolders,

September is almost here, and we are in full "back-to-school" mode! I'm thrilled to welcome you back to a new school year at East High School! I hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating summer break filled with fun, family, and new experiences. The halls have been a little quiet for August, but our teachers and staff have been working diligently to prepare throughout the summer and this past week, and we can't wait to see our 9th grade students on Tuesday, September 1st, and all students on Wednesday, September 2nd. Rooted in community, we will continue to focus on what it means to be a Purgolder, with a specific focus on collaboration, engagement, and equity.

Please mark your calendars for two exciting upcoming events to start the school year. On Wednesday, September 9, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., we will host our annual Back-to-School Night Open House, a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a meal with our staff, walk the halls, and meet your student's teachers. Building these connections is essential for a successful year ahead. Additionally, Homecoming week at East High School begins the week of September 14th. Students are invited to join in on "Spirit Days" throughout the week, leading up to Friday's Pep Rally and the Homecoming Dance on Saturday. As a reminder: students must maintain positive behavior to participate in the dance.

At East High School, we firmly believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential for student success. Caregiver involvement, whether it's attending school events, volunteering, or simply staying in touch with students' teachers, makes a huge difference. We also encourage all students and caregivers to utilize the Infinite Campus Portal and App. This site (and app for your mobile device) will give you up-to-date information on students' progress and schedule.

As we have shared previously, all students will be required to follow our personal tech policy at East High School. We will go over this with all students on the first day of school.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. My door is always open. We are so excited for the journey ahead and can't wait to make this our best year yet!

There are various opportunities for students to get involved in Sports and Clubs & Activities.

Attendance and Excused Absences

Did you know attendance in the first month of school can predict good attendance through the school year?

Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. Find out more on the MMSD Attendance Website. Students can be reported absent using the Infinite Campus Parent Portal or by calling the attendance line (608-204-1650).

Safety, Security & Policies

Various district resources are available online regarding safety, security, emergency procedures and Standard Response Protocol.

Policies and procedures can be found in the District Policy Guide and all board policies are hosted on BoardDocs.

The Behavior Education Plan (BEP) outlines our strategy to support positive student behavior and implement successful systems of support and intervention for students. The BEP is intended to help turn mistakes into learning experiences and to pair consequences with additional support. Page 14 of the BEP provides an overview of the district's progression of discipline.

Electronics Expectations

To foster an environment where students thrive, we are focusing on engagement, connections, and personal responsibility. MMSD’s Board of Education has passed Board Policy 4404, which limits the use of wireless technology devices, including cell phones, during the school day. This policy, which follows WI Act 42, prohibits personal technology, including phones, personal laptops, headphones, earbuds, and video games, during all instructional time, including passing periods and restroom breaks. This policy intends to foster an active academic environment, minimize classroom distractions, and increase student mental health and well-being in and out of the classroom. Continued family support and family/student conversations are essential to the successful implementation of this policy.

Upon entering each class, students must silence their devices and place them into their designated slot in the classroom "phone hotel". Devices stay locked away for the duration of the period. Students are also encouraged to utilize a locker to store their phones if they do not want to leave them in the classroom phone hotel. If personal tech is used outside of permitted times, support staff will collect the device for the remainder of the day. Staff will communicate with families about cell phone usage during unauthorized times. Individual plans will be made for students who struggle to follow the policy.

Transportation

The District does not generally provide transportation to high school students. Rather, the District and City of Madison work cooperatively to ensure that Madison Metro Transit routes are available to students as a primary means of transportation. District-provided Madison Metro bus passes are available for students who:

  • Reside within the boundaries of the school attendance area
  • Reside more than one and one-half (1.5) miles from their attendance area school.
  • Have demonstrable financial need, including qualifying for the Free & Reduced Meal Program.

Students who qualify for a district-funded bus pass based on the criteria above can fill out this google form using their district google account to request one and then then pick it up in their Neighborhood Office before school, during lunch, or after school. Note that the student's guardian must have already applied for and been approved for free and reduced meals for the 2025-2026 school year before they can be issued a district-funded bus pass. Students can ride the bus for free during the first weeks of school until they receive their bus pass.
